Cutting last year's growth from Eucalyptus cloeziana (Gympie Messmate) pollards. This was an experiment to grow what is usually very large trees into a small area for pole/post (and biomass) production. Could also be a technique for growing Eucalypts in urban yards if one was so inclined.
The thicker prunings are used for fuel/biochar production with the leaf and twigs used for mulch below these stems.

2 years and 2 months; the #BushRegen / #rewilding in a local riparian zone is moving along nicely. Using a hybrid #Syntropic / #miyawaki style in rows (barely visible now), with #pollard, lifting (pruning), biomass cycling of natives/weeds, and eventually thinning to select better performers to increase growth rates. 60m long, 40m wide, just over 3000 plants mostly all grown from seed (some seedlings dug up and potted).

Our little botany group were surveying a plot of land that had been spotted as being "of interest" by a Natural England surveyor and which the farmer had fenced off to protect. The Botany wasn't brilliant species-wise, but ye gods, the trees were awesome. Round these parts farming's behind the times and these trees were crops until relatively recently, resulting in ancient gnarly trees. Want to grow #eucalyptus in your yard but they are too darn big?
Try #pollard, an ancient practice of cutting the "poll" at a pre-determined height and using or cycling the material for mulch. Every cut is always made on new wood so it's a sound #arboriculture practice, it can maintain #trees to specific heights that are reset on a cycle plus they don't get out of control. Bonus is, they also live longer based on a pollard history of thousands of years.
Pictured here are Eucalyptus cloeziana, Gympie Messmate, pollards with #vetiver grass underneath as a mulching plant. The Vetiver existed first, the #eucalypts were planted in after the Vetiver Grass suppressed the pasture grass.
These poles will be grown and harvested as 2.1m posts eventually while some Kei Apples and Citrus establish underneath.
As soon as these reached a medium size, insects like sawfly and stick insects moved in which were never present before as the area is too small to grow full size Gum trees.

Handweeding and adding *Lomandra hystrix *plus a few assorted trees into a SE QLD #bushregeneration #riparian trial site, a mix of a #Miyawaki style on #Syntropic rows. All grown from seed in a home nursery, and watered once at planting time. No fertiliser or any amendments in field, soaked in seaweed and worm castings the day of planting. No herbicide will ever be used. The 2m *Commersonia bartramia* on right of frame of Photo 1+2 is 4 months old.
The resulting tree growth will be thinned to best performers while maintaining species #biodiversity and spacing. Some will be volunteered for #biomass production through #pollard or a form thereof, more often than not the faster-growing pioneer species. You may think the spacing is crazy but if I grow 50 tubes from the same seed batch, there may be 5 great performers, 30 OK, 5 poor, and 10 thinned in nursery. Even where they are planted onsite could be a difference in growth rates.
Photos 3+4 are 3 months old, have had less rainfall, and are at tractor spacing if that was ever required for mowing management. Just a test between closer and wider spacing across the site.
This is part of a 40m wide, 10 row system that is 1.5 years at the oldest. As the system matures, herbs and shade-loving species will be added when the weather is good (maybe after #elnino).
Rather than call it Miyawaki/Syntropic mix, how about something like S.A.P - Successional Accelerated Planting? Something tree-related? Any ideas?

@breadandcircuses You are absolutely right that industrial-scale wood burning is unsustainable, especially if it involves cutting down forests.
A slight nuance though: biomass *can* be sustainable under some conditions. In case of wood:
- Small scale, close to the source.
- #Coppice, #pollard or #prune the trees, rather than taking them down entirely.
- #Compost to generate heat (and perhaps methane) and use as #mulch afterwards if possible.
- Use rocket mass heating otherwise.
