  1. My favourite building site in #Bristol has been a bit quiet this summer - there's been actual work going on so hoardings were up and ground was being disturbed. It's back at rest now & while some species have vanished, this one has arrived new, probably from a local "wildflower" planting area. A melilot, I think Ribbed Melilot. #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  2. Creeping Thistle has delightfully furry-looking #SeedHeads. These ones seen today and snapped for #WildflowerHour.

  3. Guernsey Fleabane #SeedHeads for #WildflowerHour today. The seed heads don't last long but are much prettier than the actual flowers which look little different when open to how they look in bud. #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  4. If you ask for photos of #SeedHeads for #WildflowerHour then you're clearly going to get lots of Wild Carrot. If there's a better seed head among the UK species list I've not seen it. #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  5. Nearing the end of the season for the large Fleabane plant in my front yard, but it's still in flower so photos are still mandatory. How could I argue with a plant like this? #WildflowerHour #Swindon #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  6. Dwarf mallow for #WildflowerHour. Not technically a lifer, but the first time I've seen it and remembered that I didn't have a photo of it yet. Growing isolated in what was once a municipal lawn but is now just dead grass with the first new shoots emerging after recent rain. #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  7. With the Illecebrum in the background, I also spotted marsh cudweed. Both grew in sandy tracks. An hour or so later, I saw a big fire truck rushing past along the track… It turned out it was a false alarm. A glider pilot thought he had seen smoke.

  8. Close to the marsh gentian, I also saw this Illecebrum. I believe it is rare in the UK, and also not very common in the Netherlands. In Dutch it is called ‘grondster’ meaning ground star.

  9. Lifer! I've seen Strawberry Clover before, but always in situations where there was some doubt about the ID due to not seeing #SeedHeads. This one in the process of developing doesn't leave much room for doubt. In #Paris at the Parc Andre Citroen during the week. #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  10. Despite the severe drought, I found this marsh gentian in the moors of our NP Hoge Veluwe. #WildflowerHour

  11. As it has been so dry, I was a bit fearful that Autumn Lady's-tresses would not be found this year. On one site I know well nearby none were to be found a week ago, the grass all brown and tangled with sweet-briars. But yesterday, a slightly misty/damp day, a few were to be found at another spot in the Purbeck Hills, within feet of the roadside gate and a busy public footpath. This plant was only about 6 cm high, which is fairly typical. The last UK native orchid species to flower, their appearance always marks a major junction in many a naturalists' year.

  12. Prairie is among the most destroyed habitats on this continent, and this is one of its markers.

Everything you can see of it is built to be burned off.

The taproot goes fifteen feet down into ground nobody has broken since before there was a state there. Some live close to a century.

What's the one you'd put in the ground knowing you won't see it finished?

  13. Nine feet up in the tallgrass, leaves turned north and south to duck the midday sun. That's how it got the name — and how people once took a bearing on open ground with nothing else to sight on.

Silphium laciniatum. Blooming right now through September.

  14. This week’s challenge for #WildflowerHour was wallflowers, but the walls of my city Amersfoort are baren at the moment, probably as a result of the drought. I only found some ferns.

  15. Heather in full bloom this week! Erica almost gone, Calluna at its height.

  16. Sea Rocket and an absolute BEAUT of a rose -- almost heraldic -- at Chanonry Point, the Black Isle, Scotland.

  17. The only green locally is from trees and hedges. Lots of berries in the hedgerow - with close up of the Hawthorn.

  18. So dry around here that it’s hard to find anything in flower. However this Syritta pipiens hoverfly has found a lovely Ragwort.💛

  19. Now the hoardings have come down at the building site near our office, the Hoary Mustard can be seen up close. Lots of this on the disturbed ground on the edges near the fence. #WildflowerHour #Bristol #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  20. I'm never confident with the various species with green, inconspicuous flowers. I think this one's Mugwort. #Swindon station on Friday morning, on the waste ground by platform 4. #WildflowerHour #CommonNames #Wiltshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography
