  1. A plant to plant, not a plant to dose. Cha bhris am freumh — the root does not break.

What's the one you'd put in the ground knowing you won't see it finished?

  6. Prairie is among the most destroyed habitats on this continent, and this is one of its markers.

Everything you can see of it is built to be burned off.

The taproot goes fifteen feet down into ground nobody has broken since before there was a state there. Some live close to a century.

  11. Nine feet up in the tallgrass, leaves turned north and south to duck the midday sun. That's how it got the name — and how people once took a bearing on open ground with nothing else to sight on.

Silphium laciniatum. Blooming right now through September.

  16. Three plants that grow on the sea cliffs at Dawlish. Sour Fig (the new name for a plant that used to have a racial slur in its name), Osteospermum and Seaside Daisy. All garden escapes. #Dawlish #Devon #TheWinter10 #NewYearPlantHunt #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  17. I exceeded #TheWinter10 by a long way on Friday while doing the #NewYearPlantHunt around Dawlish on the #Devon coast. 23 species in flower despite the cold weather, although a lot of those were garden escapes. The highlight was Rue, which isn't grown much in gardens so is extremely rare as a pavement plant. But there it was in full flower in a pavement beside a roadside flower bed.

  18. Over on BlueSky the #WildflowerHour team announced that there will be a few weeks without weekly challenges until it's time to start doing the regular #TheWinter10 during UK winter. So they suggested posting your #FavouritePlant of the year as well as your finds from the current week. Most of us will have several highlights and will find it hard to choose.

  19. I don't normally manage #TheWinter10 for #WildflowerHour but in #Dawlish on new year's eve for the BSBI #NewYearPlantHunt I recorded 30! Plus Common Rue, which I was hoping for, did flower but a few days after the deadline. Most of the species I saw were either invasives or garden escapes. These 4 are Wall Bellflower, "Sour Fig" (no, I'm not using the usual English name), Osteospermum sp and Hebe (Veronica sp). #Devon #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  20. This week's #WildflowerHour has a one-off challenge (although you can still do #TheWinter10 if you wish) - #FestivePlants can be interpreted in many ways, not restricted to those associated with Christmas, or indeed other midwinter festivals. 8pm to 9pm UK time on Sunday as usual.

  21. Forgot to post last week’s #TheWinter10 and the app takes only 9… but they are red dead-nettle, tansy, ivy-leaved toadflax, sow thistle, dandelion, brown knapweed, hairy vetch, yarrow, false mayweed. Number 10 in the next post #WildflowerHour

  22. Red Clover, Dandelion, Comfrey, Creeping Buttercup, Ivy, Bristly Oxtongue, Hedge Mustard, Oxeye Daisy, Ragwort & Red Deadnettle #TheWinter10 #WildflowerHour
    #Nature #Botany #Wildflowers

  23. This week’s #TheWinter10 - Ivy-leaved Toadflax, Comfrey, Groundsel, *possibly* Green-field Speedwell, Yarrow, Small Nettle, Petty Spurge, Common Field Speedwell, Shepherd’s Purse & Ivy #WildflowerHour

  24. For the next few months, the #WildflowerHour challenge is #TheWinter10 - see if you can find 10 different species of wild flower actually flowering in a single week. A very good challenge for learning to identify common urban weeds!

  25. Too early in the year for #TheWinter10 but there were 10 species available on my local #Bristol building site on Tuesday so: Ox-eye Daisy, Ribbed Melilot, Annual Mercury, Wild Carrot, Marigold, Herb Robert, Narrow-leaved Ragwort, Oxford Ragwort, Ivy-leaved Toadflax, Buddleja. #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  26. This week's #WildflowerHour challenge isn't a challenge as such - we're invited to post the plant we’ve been most pleased to see this year! Post your pics for
#wildflowerhour this Sunday 8-9pm using the hashtag #FavouriteFind. Also post your #WildflowerHour pictures from this week too! From next week the challenge each week will be the same - #TheWinter10 ie 10 finds in one week. Sorry for those in the southern hemisphere for whom this isn't much of a challenge!

  27. Not *quite* in flower, but still made me happy - Early Purple Orchid (#Orchis mascula) in West Sussex

    #bloomscrolling #wildflowerhour #VC13

  28. Didn’t make the #Winter10 with this week’s slim #WildFlowerHour pickings, but here are some slightly unseasonable Dandelion (#Taraxacum agg.), Daisy (#Bellis perennis), False Oxlip (Primula × polyantha - probably a garden escape, but naturalised on this bank) and White Dead-nettle (Lamium album). All in #WestSussex #VC13 except the lamium #Surrey #VC17

  29. Only the hardiest of souls seen out this week. Smooth Sowthistle, Dandelion, White Deadnettle, Groundsel, Common Mouse-ear, Yarrow, Shepherd’s Purse, Spotted Deadnettle, Feverfew & Nipplewort #TheWinter10

  30. This week’s #TheWinter10 - Common Mallow, Ivy, Dandelion, Hedge Mustard, Shepherd’s Purse, Common Field Speedwell, Groundsel, Red Deadnettle, Smooth Sowthistle & Purple Toadflax #WildflowerHour

  31. A challenge for #WildflowerHour in winter is #TheWinter10 - try to find 10 species in flower. Yesterday I managed 12. Common Ragwort, Common Gorse, Alder, Canadian Fleabane, Guernsey Fleabane, Fox-and-Cubs, Red Campion, Herb Robert, Nipplewort, Honeysuckle, Mexican Fleabane, Ivy-leaved Toadflax. #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #plantscience #photography
