A plant to plant, not a plant to dose. Cha bhris am freumh — the root does not break.
What's the one you'd put in the ground knowing you won't see it finished?

Prairie is among the most destroyed habitats on this continent, and this is one of its markers.
Everything you can see of it is built to be burned off.
The taproot goes fifteen feet down into ground nobody has broken since before there was a state there. Some live close to a century.
What's the one you'd put in the ground knowing you won't see it finished?

Nine feet up in the tallgrass, leaves turned north and south to duck the midday sun. That's how it got the name — and how people once took a bearing on open ground with nothing else to sight on.
Silphium laciniatum. Blooming right now through September.

This week’s challenge for #WildflowerHour was wallflowers, but the walls of my city Amersfoort are baren at the moment, probably as a result of the drought. I only found some ferns.

Heather in full bloom this week! Erica almost gone, Calluna at its height.

Sea Rocket and an absolute BEAUT of a rose -- almost heraldic -- at Chanonry Point, the Black Isle, Scotland.

Purple-leaved Willowherb, in the old churchyard at Fortrose, Scotland.

The only green locally is from trees and hedges. Lots of berries in the hedgerow - with close up of the Hawthorn.

So dry around here that it’s hard to find anything in flower. However this Syritta pipiens hoverfly has found a lovely Ragwort.💛

Now the hoardings have come down at the building site near our office, the Hoary Mustard can be seen up close. Lots of this on the disturbed ground on the edges near the fence. #WildflowerHour #Bristol #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

I'm never confident with the various species with green, inconspicuous flowers. I think this one's Mugwort. #Swindon station on Friday morning, on the waste ground by platform 4. #WildflowerHour #CommonNames #Wiltshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

Purple Loosestrife doing OK by the edge of what's left of the lakes at #RSPB #MiddletonLakes on Monday. Very little else still flowering. #WildflowerHour #Birmingham #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

Bristly Ox-tongue gets its name from the leaves which have spines on the flat surface not just on the edges. #WildflowerHour #CommonNames #Swindon #Wiltshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

Taken on Friday in #Bristol - Narrow-leaved Ragwort near Temple Meads. The plants I first found on the edge of a building site seem not to have survived the summer, but some of their offspring a bit closer to the station are doing well. #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

Another #WildflowerHour offering for #CommonNames - Lady's Bedstraw. One of those where the traditional folk name gets used by the botanists. One of very few species looking OK on Monday at #MiddletonLakes. #Birmingham #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

I'd normally call this Wild Carrot for #WildflowerHour but as we're doing #CommonNames let's use the alternative, Queen Anne's Lace. A rather charming old name, and the flowers do look a bit like lace. #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

A rather dry and shrivelled specimen of Tansy, which was exciting for me as I don't see it often around here. On Monday I was at #RSPB #MiddletonLakes where I saw this. #WildflowerHour #Birmingham #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

One of the most widely-used #CommonNames in the UK is Old Man's Beard for the seed heads of Clematis. It has other names too, but that's the one everyone knows. This one was clambering over a patch of neglected concrete at #Swindon station on Friday. #WildflowerHour #Wiltshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

On Friday morning my train was late so I explored #Swindon station looking for plants with interesting #CommonNames. Of course Butterfly Bush (aka Buddleia) was everywhere, including this one poking through a fence and making a nice #WildflowerHour image. #Wiltshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

The mandatory Fleabane photo for #WildflowerHour. Taken last night just after sunset with the ISO dialled up as far as it would go. Rather pleased with how this image ended up.
