Prairie is among the most destroyed habitats on this continent, and this is one of its markers.

Everything you can see of it is built to be burned off.

The taproot goes fifteen feet down into ground nobody has broken since before there was a state there. Some live close to a century.

Nine feet up in the tallgrass, leaves turned north and south to duck the midday sun. That's how it got the name — and how people once took a bearing on open ground with nothing else to sight on.

So this weekend #WildflowerHour asked for #SignsOfSpring and at #Ravensroost Wood I saw my first Goat Willow flowers of the year. If you think the branches are at an odd angle, you're right. Sea monsters! I think of Yucca as a well-behaved pot plant, but if you're far enough south there's a garden variety as well. And in #Dawlish there are a couple which have made a break for the freedom of the waste land between the railway and the sea cliff, of which this is one. I don't normally manage #TheWinter10 for #WildflowerHour but in #Dawlish on new year's eve for the BSBI #NewYearPlantHunt I recorded 30! Plus Common Rue, which I was hoping for, did flower but a few days after the deadline. Most of the species I saw were either invasives or garden escapes. These 4 are Wall Bellflower, "Sour Fig" (no, I'm not using the usual English name), Osteospermum sp and Hebe (Veronica sp). #Devon #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

Two flowers for #WildflowerHour. Marsh #Thistle (#Cirsium palustre) usually has purple inflorescences, and Herb Robert (#Geranium robertianum) usually has pink flowers, but in both of these specimens the flowers are - unusually - a #WhiteForm.
