  11. It's that time of year — I'm hearing the frogs in and around my pond croaking in the night. I love hearing them.

Since I'm very rarely able to get a photo of them, here's some frog art. This was a cover of Communications Arts magazine, and they sold prints. The illustrator is London-based James Marsh.

  20. Gifts of the Universe

    #条河麻耶生誕祭2025 #MayaBirthday

Maya stared out at the water, thinking how the sunlight sparkled like fireworks.

    “Boo!”

Megu’s voice startled her out of her reverie, and she nearly tumbled into the pond.

“Don’t do that!” Maya squeaked, her voice still high-pitched from shock.

“Why not? You do it all the time,” Megu said, grinning. “Besides, I called your name, and you didn’t answer. What were you thinking about?”

“How nice it would be to have fireworks on your birthday,” Maya said. “It’d be like the universe was giving you a present.”

“How profound,” Megu murmured, smiling—sometimes Maya really did surprise her. “Anyway, I have something for you.” She handed Maya a box wrapped in bright paper. “Rize helped me get it, so it’s from both of us.”

“Can I open it now, or do I have to wait for the party?” Maya asked, fingers already posed to tear paper.

“Syaro would have a fit if you opened it then. Chino and Cocoa too—well, maybe not Cocoa.”

“What is it?” Maya asked, intrigued. The box was too small for a rabbit, which was the only thing she could think of that might freak Syaro out.

“Open it and find out.” Megu’s face twitched with anticipation—and mischief.

Paper flew, and Maya lifted the lid.

“Eep!” she cried, toppling backward. SPLASH. Water exploded into the air.

She came up dripping, eyes locked on the culprit paddling away.

Then, without even shaking off, she lunged after the swimming frog.

“Gotcha!” she declared, holding it up triumphantly as its legs flailed in protest. Then she turned to the stunned Megu with a grin. “That’s better than fireworks. Thanks.”

Finding her voice, Megu called out, “Happy birthday, Maya!”
