  1. CW: Porpoise death

A static net was equipped with passive acoustic monitors to study how harbor porpoises interact with the nets. The monitors recorded a pair of porpoises feeding nearby, and the entanglement and death of one of them. The survivor stayed in the vicinity for an hour and called and called and called.

  2. Red-winged blackbirds aggressively defend their nests against brood parasites and predators, but when tested, birds in western Oregon, where rattlesnakes have been extirpated, behaved differently toward rattlesnakes than to non-venomous gopher snakes and other predators. The birds would physically strike the gopher snakes, but not the rattlesnakes.

  3. Pregnant female jumping spiders (*Toxeus maxillosus*), when placed in an environment that challenged their ability to build a nest for rearing their offspring, took time before starting nest-building and then came up with varying solutions to the problem. The authors suggest a social lifestyle and prolonged maternal care drives cognitive development.

  7. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐭❄️ Researchers studying long-clawed #shrew skulls from #Hokkaido found that while the #skull shrinks in #winter, the snout grows larger and wider, the reverse of a known seasonal shrinking pattern.

The expanded nasal cavity may warm freezing #air before it reaches the #brain, keep scent detection sharp, or both. The changes appear reversible and may occur in other shrew species.

  10. The venomous ant *Megalomyrmex symmetochus* lives parasitically in colonies of the ant *Sericomyrmex amabilis*. When individuals of *M. symmetochus* are confronted by *S. amabilis*, they display their stinger and release volatilized venom rather than stinging, even preferring these behaviors after being bitten by the host species--though they will sting.
