  1. Here's a Tunga Rere, the huhu beetle, NZ's largest native beetle species.

I'd forgotten I'd taken this photo and just found it in my backlog and popped it on iNaturalist (and Flickr).

    They're fantastically chunky beetles.

  2. A Trigonarthris atrata flower longhorn feeds from the spring blooms of a rough-leafed dogwood. Austin, Texas.

  3. I found this handsome longhorn beetle on the outside of our house last night. My daughter likened it to a 1970s station wagon from the movies, complete with wooden trim.

It's an endemic NZ species commonly called a lemon tree borer, although its larvae bore into many native trees as well. Here in Ōtautahi-Christchurch they've mostly been seen on #iNaturalist in October–December, so it's right on time.

  4. Found this massive beetle on the porch yesterday. It’s a hardwood stump borer, Mallodon dasystomus, one of Texas’ largest insects. #Prioninae #Insects #Beetles #Cerambycidae

  5. Model and mimic: a clever longhorn beetle (Euderces reichei, at right) tries its best to look like a local carpenter ant, Campontous decipiens, as they both feed on a spring dogwood flower. Brackenridge Field Laboratory, Texas.

  8. I found this red long-horned beetle (Obrium rufulum) way down yonder in my pawpaw patch. Per BugGuide its larvae bore into dead twigs of ash, linden, and oak, but there's no mention on internet of what adults do with their days, other than often being found on their hosts and looking pretty. I happen to have a dead pawpaw so of course I'll monitor it for signs of boring. #beetle #insects #coleoptera #entomology #nature #pawpaw #cerambycidae #MacroPhotography #AsiminaTriloba

  15. I ran a #Malaise trap for a couple of years in my front garden in #Aranda, ACT and am finally processing the last couple of months of samples. Here are some insects from 17-24 Feb 2023.

Tiny #ant: I think, Crematogaster sp.

    Megastigmid #wasp: Bootanomyia sp.

    Reddish #longhorn #beetle: Epithora dorsalis

Dark brown longhorn beetle: Phoracantha punctata

  16. Since I've been hearing cicadas, last night I went out to look for emerging ones on the big willows by the lake. I didn't find any, but it was a pretty good night for beetles. A big chonky scarab, a velvety-looking click beetle, and a bunch of the glossy red-brown pole borers that always make me think of candied pecans. I haven't given into the temptation to put one in my mouth…yet.

  21. Three beetles from a #SLAM (#Malaise) trap in #Canberra, 22-27 January 2023.

    #Staphylinidae, I believe #Tachyporinae: inaturalist.ala.org.au/observa

#Cerambycidae (I find it amazing how hard it is to place these to species): inaturalist.ala.org.au/observa

One that I thought would be an easy fit for Scolytiae or one of the other wood-boring groups, but which is completely stumping me right now: inaturalist.ala.org.au/observa

  22. Wednesday’s #InverteFest is…a Locust Borer! I found this #Megacyllene robiniae in a field of #Salidago spp. (#Goldenrod ). on the sidelines of a construction site in Lawrenceville, #Pittsburgh PA. I am in love with #Cerambycidae for obvious reasons - but this one is particularly interesting because of their #Aposematism. Lots of insects take on the likeness of wasps and bees because predators associate them with stingers or chemical defenses - neither of which the Locust Borer has. They feed on goldenrod pollen and have the most adorable dense setae.

  23. Four more insects from the #Malaise trap, Canberra, ACT, 26 August to 2 September 2022

    1. #Ichneumoninae sp. - I'll key out at least the genus soon.

    2. #Orthocentrus sp. (#Ichneumonidae) - probably the commonest #ichneumon #wasp (or set of externally similar species) in my garden

    3. #Pentacladus eucalypti (a #BarkLouse #Elipsocidae)

    4. #Lamiinae sp. (a #LonghornBeetle #Cerambycidae) - I always find these harder to identify than I would expect
