Can Earthly #microbes survive on the #moon Scientists say yes (in the shade)
Microbes likely to hitch a ride to space with human explorers could survive in shady spots in the moon’s south pole region, say researchers from #NASA and the University of Maryland

  2. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🥜🧫 A first-of-its-kind #trial at #Boston #Children’s Hospital tested whether fecal microbiota transplant pills could help #adults with severe #peanut #allergies.

Six of 15 participants meaningfully raised their peanut #protein tolerance, some up to 600 mg, with effects lasting at least four months. Researchers traced the benefit to specific Bacteroides #bacteria that appeared to calm immune responses, though larger placebo-controlled trials are still needed.

  3. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🧊🦠 Ötzi the Iceman, frozen for more than 5,000 years after his death, turns out to be carrying more than the #history books expected. Thanks to the #mummy’s cool, damp storage, he's a living community of tiny organisms, many of which are #microbes that lived on him from the very beginning of his long journey through the #ice.

  4. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🦟🧪 Researchers in #Florida recruited 119 volunteers in #Miami and measured which #mosquitoes lingered near each person’s arm in a scent chamber.

Using gas #chromatography and skin-swab #DNA sequencing, they compared air #chemistry and the #microbes living on volunteers’ forearms. The finding is that each of three mosquito species favors its own blend of human scents, and that the most enticing people for one species are not necessarily appealing to another.

  5. #Earth’s #stratosphere is a mysterious superhighway for #microbes
Stratosphere holds plenty of life—tiny single-celled microbes navigate extreme dehydration, temperatures as low as −60C and intense DNA-damaging ultraviolet radiation that would kill most life on Earth. The microbes the researchers found weren’t extremophiles you’d expect at edge of space. They turned out to be some same humdrum bugs that grow on our crops, our gardens, even our skin.

  6. "Crop rotations, reduced or no-tillage practices, organic farming, and cover crops increase total microbial #biomass and shift the community structure toward a more fungal-dominated community, thereby enhancing the accumulation of" microbial biomass and microbially derived organic matter.

  7. Scientists unlock the secret role of ocean microbes in Earth’s climate

Beneath the ocean’s surface, an unseen system works without pause. Tiny microbes drift through the water, breaking down…
