I had a bit of fun with freehand work on this Salamander, that and combining it with transfers has resulted in a pretty great finish I think 😄 Keep an eye out for the rest of the terminator squad this week #warhammer40k #salamanders #badabwar #spacemarines #paintingwarhammer

You’d think with all the wildlife I have at my house, Red Efts would be a common occurrence. They aren’t. I have yet to see one (and let’s face it, they aren’t hard to see 😅) here at the house or in the neighboring forests for miles.
I was several towns away when I finally came across this one. (You can tell it was happy for the photo op as it just sat there as they’re prone to do.)

🥾 We hiked past a water impoundment that is usually disruptive to a mountaintop environment, but this one was full of salamanders!
🦎 These amphibians prefer cold, clean, running water as in pristine streams. This pond had to be relatively undisturbed.
📷 I stayed still and got a pic of a Spotted Salamander as it floated into a sunny spot. Love the orange spots!

Last night we saw:
-1 northern spring salamander
-3 four-toed salamanders
-a couple bull frogs
-a few green frogs
-dozens of spotted salamanders
-lots of wood frogs
-so many spring peepers (one shown in image)I also didn't realize (or forgot) spring salamanders can stay in a larval stage with external gills for 4 years, so that was a confusing find.

Things I came across this weekend in no particular order: #salamanders in the dirt, overheard conversations about book preferences, lemon meringue #frenchtoast, time off together with my husband, new tv shows, overgrown privet, fabric samples, grocery delivery, too much #salmon "Dopamine (split brain version)" by Madelline (listen with headphones). https://youtu.be/YMYqvPHLjjM?si=h4QM1uIfa2TNh5v8

The final 2 terminators for the squad are Salamanders. The first based on my conversions for pre heresy terminator armour before there was an official kit or even HH 1.0 😂 The second is an up armoured lad that will gain flames as their details #warhammer40k #salamanders #badabwar #kitbash

An axolotl. Axolotls are having a moment – our passion for these cute little salamanders means they are everywhere online but vanishingly rare in the wild, where the species is under increasing threat.

Some pictures from the San leandro reservoir on a wet day perfect for amphibian herping.
we saw tons of the slender #salamanders, too many to count. so far one Ensatina and one Newt. The newts are extremely toxic with sequestered tetrodotoxin

@animalculum very fascinating that not only certain insects can be #activeinwinter temperatures, but even #salamanders.

In the snow, these #salamanders get supercool https://www.npr.org/2025/12/24/nx-s1-5649922/snow-ice-blue-spotted-salamanders-supercool preprint: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.03.28.645960v1.full
"blue-spotted salamanders can be seen walking on snow, but it was thought that this happened when temperatures had warmed up a bit... now, the researchers had a thermal camera with them... some salamanders had temperatures below freezing... they apparently have some kind of natural anti-freeze that allows them to become supercooled... letting them start their breeding as early as possible"

For the last 20 years, Dominican nuns in a Mexican monastery have cared for the largest known captive population of the critically endangered achoque salamander. Now scientists from Chester Zoo in the U.K. are collaborating with the sisters and Mexican conservationists to test a microchipping method that they hope will help them monitor the species’ dwindling wild population, reports Mongabay’s Liz Kimbrough.
