  1. This is a #grass‽ From giant bamboos to maize and the common lawn ryegrass, #Poaceae can be quite variable. #Panicum cupressifolium from #Madagascar has minute leaves, making it look like a #cypress (hence the name).

  3. Mangoes are known for their delicious fleshy #fruits. The #mango #fruit is not large berry but a so-called #drupe. In drupes, the innermost layer of the fruit, called "endocarp", is not fleshy like in a #berry (e.g., avocado, grapes or kiwi), but hard and called "#pyrena", "pit" or "stone". Inside the stone, one can find the actual #seed. Cherries, plums and peaches are also drupes.
The seed has 2 large embryonic leaves, so-called "cotyledons" that store nutrients

  10. @CommonByNature I thought 'a bouquet of botanists' sounded good, but considering this is like an attempt at classification, why look further than 'a family of botanists'?

    #OTD Joyce Winifred Vickery, #Australian #Forensic #Botanist, is born.

By 1920, #Malaya produced over half the world's rubber.

And to think it all started with #Seeds Henry collected from 22 #Plants...

#OTD Howard Scott Gentry, American #Botanist, is born.

The world's leading authority on #Agaves, Howard went to #Mexico every year to collect #specimens & traveled via #Mule.

    The #USDA pursued #Agave & #Wild #Yam #Family to make #Arthritis #Medicine.

    Howard once said:

I refused several times to become a desk man for USDA. It was a chance to cut out all the #Travel, but I told them,
"No, not me. I want to work with #Plants, not people. People are problems."

During the 1950s, scientists proved that any part of a plant grown in nutrient media under sterile conditions can create a whole new plant.
