  1. Ladies and Gents, I present My #lawn (lols)
Extended #NoMowMay is really paying #biodiversity dividends.
All-pervading persistent precipitation prevailing prohibits pims parties. Pah! #ScottishSummer #Argyll

  3. #NoMowMay is over and somehow we have ended up in the middle of June. But does that mean we have cut the meadow down?

... trick question, of course not :blob3cevil:

The grasses have grown tall and turned golden, most flowers have gone to seed - now's the time for birds and mice to get their snacks. And I hope that the Primulas, Hawkweed and Geum will get their chance to disperse their seeds so we get even MORE of them next season.

But we will start mowing some patches soon, as gently as possible, so the meadow can succesively regrow. We want our critters to have places to live and hide throughout the whole year

  5. Woke up at home in Scotland at 5am (with jet lag), admired our green views (already light): cows grazing in the fields, rabbits in our now overgrown garden (#NoMowMay for #WildFlowers), pigeon nesting on our balcony (grr!), and the quiet before almost anyone is up. Gone 6am now, and the birds are awake and chattering now.

Very different to our Tokyo trip's mornings!

  6. Question: If you use a scythe (which is slow enough to allow time for insects and animals time to get out of the way… would this type of cutting still qualify in a “spirit of the law” way in addition to following a “letter of the law” way?

Note: I personally have a permanent no-mow, non-grass type yard so this is a theoretical thought experiment only.

  7. The lawn's looking lovely! Buttercups, fox and cubs, white clover, speedwells & daisy's so far. Thistles and sow thistles & others(?) yet to flower. #NoMowMay

  9. So that's the end of no-mow-May. I love the way that various little flowers have popped up in my lawn.

The last photo, in case you're wondering, was also no-mow September-April, and won't be mowed again until August. I like to keep a corner of the lawn wild and only mow it once a year.

  17. Two favourites: Anthoxanthum odoratum (Sweet vernal grass with heavenly smell of fresh hay) and Holcus lanatus (with its beautiful German name Wolliges Honiggras, "wooly honey-grass").

If you can, why don't you take the time to take a super close look at grass flowers? They can be absolutely stunning! 🌾

What's your favourite grass, I want to know! Everybody should have one! 😍

  19. Guess I'm just doing a second-half #NoMowMay due to a week's vacation followed immediately by heatwave and a week+ of torrential rain 🫠
