My father and hospice care.

Today my mind is set on learning what I need to do and what I can do to get my father into hospice care in Indiana while I’m here in California.

I’m feeling stressed thinking about it all, but I’m trying to negate that stress by being mindful and focusing on the end result.

Why am I stressed?

I didn’t think that I’d ever be doing this. I don’t want to do this. I don’t want this responsibility. Before you judge me though, allow me to explain.

My parents divorced when I was 2. After that, my father popped in and out of my life up until the age of 10 where, after having met him at a park and seeing him high on painkiller for the 100th time, I told him that I didn’t want to see him until he was “better”. My father then spent the next decade getting himself clean, starting his own one man tennis court cleaning and maintenance service, and doing what he could to survive in southern California.

I never heard from him or saw him until I was about to turn 18 when he sent me a letter, explaining everything and asking to be a part of my life again.

I did, but it was never what you would call a typical relationship. I worked with him at his tennis court service for a few years, pulling large hoses and cleaning wind screens. We bought motorcycles at the same time and would go cruising up and down the coast. We made some good memories.

When my daughter was born, he would come by often to visit her or to take her places. Then, when she was 11. He moved to Indiana to be closer to his mothers family. We barely spoke 5 times a year after that.

I know he’s my father, but he’s not my dad. I love him, but not in that way. It’s hard to explain.

When I got the call from the retirement home (non hospice) he currently lives in, saying that he needed more help and someone to take care of his finances and help him get into a place with memory care, I agreed because I knew it was the right thing to do, not because I wanted to. I agreed because even though we were never as close as a father and son should be, I can’t blame him for who he is or was. He never had any malice towards me. His life was just screwed up and the drugs took away our time together.

However…

I was raised in a toxic family. My mother and her family had a lot of issues, and I picked up all of them as a child. I tell my girlfriend that even though I may lean towards compassion, it’s only because I recognized that I was raised to be an asshole, and I don’t want to be like them. As I explain it to her “Sometimes I feel like an asshole pretending not to be one.”.

When my father found out that I agreed to help him, he couldn’t believe it. He kept asking me “but why are you doing this?” because he never imagined that I would. He understood the status of our relationship just as much as I did.

But I don’t want to be the asshole that I was raised to be. I don’t blame him. I don’t have ill will towards him. Yet I don’t WANT to do any of this.

I know I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t. So I am. And it’s that split that causes the stress. My brain says “WHY?” and my heart says “So that I can live with myself.” and I hate that feeling.

The Buddha taught that it’s our expectations that cause our suffering, and that to find peace we must be mindful and find a middle path. I guess that’s what I’m trying to do here. Let go of my expectations, and find the middle path.

It’s a work in progress.
