Thread about physical health, meds that work for now but maybe won't work forever, and playing musical instruments.
I have psoriatic arthritis. For the past couple of years, my guitar and bass practice has been all about managed decline: Practice as much as I can without pain, keep those joints moving, but don't expect improvement or even skill maintenance over not playing at all. I was down to 20 minutes every three days or so.
Fatigue played a part in that, too. -

CW: Links between conditions: LC, ME/CFS, PTSD, RA, MS
"The findings suggest that chronic fatigue syndrome (also known as ME), long Covid, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis (MS) may be driven by common underlying mechanisms. ...
"The study found that genes linked to each illness were feeding into the same major biological systems - including immune and inflammatory signalling, mitochondrial energy production, metabolic regulation, stress-response mechanisms and neuroendocrine signalling."
Interesting!
And also a bit comical to suggest that ME/CFS and Long Covid have "largely been viewed as separate disorders", when people with ME/CFS had been saying "hey watch out, this seems similar" since practically the minute LC was identified, or even before!
True about the other three conditions, though. I don't think I've seen _those_ linked (to each other or to the first two), or not commonly at any rate.
Thanks to @trendless for the link.

Increasing evidence finds that reducing or eliminating meat from your diet and increasing plant-based foods -- especially certain types of #fiber, reduces inflammation and reduces symptoms from rheumatic diseases. Such as #rheumatoid #arthritis. Meat, on the other hand, increases inflammation. Fiber helps with the survival and proliferation of 'good' bacteria in the gut. This good bacteria reduces the amount of inflammation in the body. The less inflammation the better.
This reserach group in Amsterdam explains it pretty well on their website, and also encourage individualized exercise programs. -
Researchers found both compositional & functional gut #microbiome differences in people with various types of arthritis and I like their caution in concluding these are probably a RESPONSE to system-wide inflammation, rather than the cause of it.

My newest news story for the Canadian Healthcare Network/ The Medical Post.
JAN 2023 -- Can treating pre-symptomatic rheumatoid arthritis delay onset?
DMARDs might help, according to a review published in Autoimmunity Review.Early treatment of patients in the pre-clinical phase of #rheumatoid #arthritis (RA) may actually delay onset of the full-blown disease.
According to a systemic literature review by researchers from the Netherlands, patients in the earliest stages of disease could benefit the most from preventive strategies in terms of delayed onset and reduced disease burden, but more study is needed including if and how long symptoms could be delayed by various treatments. The review was published in the #Autoimmunity Review.
At this point, there are no formal treatment recommendations for patients in the pre-clinical stage of RA after presenting with arthralgia. Often a wait-and-see approach is taken, the authors said.
But looking forward, “in order to prevent disease development it is important to identify which patients would benefit the most from a targeted intervention since on average only 30% of seropositive individuals will develop RA in the foreseeable future, and since many different factors influence disease risk,” they wrote... etc...
