Stories in the press claim that dementia is strongly linked to hearing loss. @BBCNews's Science Focus takes a look at the facts. “Because hearing loss is so common, it appears to be the biggest risk factor,” says the University of Manchester's Dr. Jenna Littlejohn. "But that doesn’t mean it’s the main or most likely cause to you as an individual. It’s misleading to people who don’t know much about statistics or epidemiology.”

I picked up my right hearing aid today after 2 weeks of going through this loud world with only one hearing aid in my left ear.
I had forgotten how exhausting it is to hear noise but not to be able to differentiate them. Also, I forgot how much heavy lifting my right hearing aid does!
My left ear is almost completely closed for business, and even with a working hearing aid in it, I really struggled.
Now that my hearing is (sort of) back, I can go back to punching Nazis.

Sorry, but it should be illegal for any venue to play music at hearing-damaging levels and not provide free ear plugs.

I recently turned 50 and, to celebrate, my wife told me I wasn't heaing things normally anymore.
I went to the ear people who agreed with her.
I'm getting hearing aids before my mother and before my father in law, both of whom hear much worse than I do, because current science suggests that untreated hearing loss contributes to cognitive decline and dementia. No thank you!

It took three years to get a diagnosis of Menieres--2017 to 2020
It's been 5 years since I had caffinated coffee.
It's been 7 years since I shook a salt shaker.
It's been one day since I stopped decaf coffee.I began having severe vertigo last week. 3 very strong episodes, what I scale as 8 out of 10, 10 being a drop attack. Yes, that's just what it sounds like--no warning, no spinning or tilting--just down.
2 of them happened while I was driving. It really SUCKS and is very scary because even trying to get to the side of the road seems impossible when everything is sliding and tilting and moving up and down.
One other was milder.This week one severe (again while driving!) and three small episodes.
I had been free of it for
nearly two full years, after an injection into my right ear drum.I'm not fucking around with it. I called my doctor and am scheduling a second injection---the risk is deafness on that ear, whech already can't hear. Th eprevious injection caused no drum tissue damage, so it's worth it for me.
End of my pissing and moaning. I am very grateful for medicare and secondary insurance.

Does this product exist?
A microphone that you can connect via Bluetooth to any BT speaker or receiver (like a hearing aid) to make that speaker into a sort of PA system?
It seems so obvious that this should exist. But searching I seem to only find these stupid LLM generated articles, and microphones sold with its own speaker or its own receiver that you need to plug in to an aux input. Am I being stupid?

I have moderate hearing loss which is somewhat beyond age appropriate, I also have left sided tinnitus.
I'm very lazy about wearing my hearing aids but the quality of sound when I'm using them is notably better. When I take them out everything sounds as though it's being filtered through a blanket!
Certainly the world is a very noisy place when I'm using my hearing aids - the greatest joy is hearing birdsong that I miss otherwise.The aids were tuned by the audiologist to minimise the noise of my tinnitus as well.

CW: Bunch of personal stuff, some kind of whiny
Sometimes I think of how many physical/mental strikes I had against me from birth. This shrimpy* kid with a progressive hearing loss, twisted-up legs, deeply fucked #executiveFunction, who almost died right away from mastitis, who was spanked or whipped almost every day of his life from age 2-12, whose mom probably had a #personalityDisorder and ran an authoritarian dictatorship household (6 kids), whose dad was rarely around and honestly didn't seem all that involved or interested when he was; the kid who went to boarding school (for the #deaf) at age 13 and never felt 100% like part of the family after that...
Sometimes I feel sorry for myself. Other times I feel like Fuck Yeah I'm Still Here (and somehow gainfully employed and have an absofuckinglutely amazing kid).
And I remember that I was also that shrimpy* kid who couldn't stop #reading; who was obsessed with finding out what was true and right; who loved visual, musical, and dramatic #art almost more than life; who played with #words and ideas instead of balls and teammates, who had a mother willing to slap you in the face for disrespect but also willing to fight half a dozen school districts to get her kids into the best classes or #PublicSchool available, whose father didn't seem to like him all that much, but did love him and worked himself almost to death, giving up the career he was passionate about to feed his family.
The mix of #selfPity and gratitude swings wide, sometimes. This morning it's #gratitude.
*No longer shrimpy, starting at about age 25; in fact, kind of chunky since then.

I don't put a great deal of trust into studies that rely on restrospective analysis of diagnostic codes.
