Can you hear the beep? 👂
An audiogram measures something extremely useful: the quietest pure tone we can detect at different frequencies.
But:
Detection ≠ Attention ≠ UnderstandingReal hearing means extracting a voice from noise, recognising incomplete information, localising sound, adapting to change — and doing all of that comfortably and without unreasonable cognitive effort.
My new HybridMind42 article asks a simple question:
Are we measuring hearing loss, or measuring enough of human hearing to understand what a person actually needs? The audiogram isn't the problem.
Don't break the tool. Define its proper boundaries.#HybridMind42 #Audiology #Hearing #HearingLoss #HearingAids #Tinnitus #Neuroscience #HumanPerception #ScienceCommunication

Despite the early start, I'm in good spirits. The audiologist I saw today was the same one I saw at the start of me getting Meniere's Disease diagnosed, so it was awesome to see him again (and he recognised us as well). Turns out that the hearing in my left ear has gotten better, but that it's still well below my right ear (which is more or less where it should be).
Tl;dr, I now have hearing aids. xD
I didn't actually expect to walk out with hearing aids today, so that was a pleasant surprise. Instead of being a full-on in-ear lump of plastic, it's just a thin wire pointing down my ear canal. I've never gotten on with in-ear headphones and the like, so this was a pleasing option. And it was nice to know that if it wasn't, the next step would have been getting a cast of my ears for in-ear aids that actually sat right (my ears are fairly shallow).
So yeah, super pleased. It also has good Bluetooth connectivity to things like my phone and my computer(s). I tested it on a call to my mother-in-law earlier and legit thought I'd messed it up and was listening to the phone on my desk (in the best way). Spouse confirmed he couldn't hear anything, so. Yay? Yay probably.
Right, enough words. Back to Mistria.

Stories in the press claim that dementia is strongly linked to hearing loss. @BBCNews's Science Focus takes a look at the facts. “Because hearing loss is so common, it appears to be the biggest risk factor,” says the University of Manchester's Dr. Jenna Littlejohn. "But that doesn’t mean it’s the main or most likely cause to you as an individual. It’s misleading to people who don’t know much about statistics or epidemiology.”

I picked up my right hearing aid today after 2 weeks of going through this loud world with only one hearing aid in my left ear.
I had forgotten how exhausting it is to hear noise but not to be able to differentiate them. Also, I forgot how much heavy lifting my right hearing aid does!
My left ear is almost completely closed for business, and even with a working hearing aid in it, I really struggled.
Now that my hearing is (sort of) back, I can go back to punching Nazis.
