  1. I picked up my right hearing aid today after 2 weeks of going through this loud world with only one hearing aid in my left ear.

I had forgotten how exhausting it is to hear noise but not to be able to differentiate them. Also, I forgot how much heavy lifting my right hearing aid does!

My left ear is almost completely closed for business, and even with a working hearing aid in it, I really struggled.

Now that my hearing is (sort of) back, I can go back to punching Nazis.

  3. Sorry, but it should be illegal for any venue to play music at hearing-damaging levels and not provide free ear plugs.

  5. PSA:

I recently turned 50 and, to celebrate, my wife told me I wasn't heaing things normally anymore.

I went to the ear people who agreed with her.

I'm getting hearing aids before my mother and before my father in law, both of whom hear much worse than I do, because current science suggests that untreated hearing loss contributes to cognitive decline and dementia. No thank you!

    I'll take the bionic parts.

  7. I kept my hearing aids in my school desk. Never took them home.

When you've never had perfect hearing, you have no comparison point. The loss didn't feel like a loss. The solution didn't feel like a solution. I rejected the thing designed to help me for twelve years.

  8. Hearing aids in the early 90s were amplifiers. That's it. They made every sound louder, equally.

The teacher's voice? Louder. The cafeteria with a hundred kids? Also louder. There was no filtering, no way to isolate the voice you needed from the noise around it.

It took three years to get a diagnosis of Menieres--2017 to 2020

It's been 5 years since I had caffinated coffee.
It's been 7 years since I shook a salt shaker.
It's been one day since I stopped decaf coffee.

I began having severe vertigo last week. 3 very strong episodes, what I scale as 8 out of 10, 10 being a drop attack. Yes, that's just what it sounds like--no warning, no spinning or tilting--just down.

2 of them happened while I was driving. It really SUCKS and is very scary because even trying to get to the side of the road seems impossible when everything is sliding and tilting and moving up and down.
    One other was milder.

This week one severe (again while driving!) and three small episodes.

I had been free of it for
nearly two full years, after an injection into my right ear drum.

I'm not fucking around with it. I called my doctor and am scheduling a second injection---the risk is deafness on that ear, whech already can't hear. Th eprevious injection caused no drum tissue damage, so it's worth it for me.

End of my pissing and moaning. I am very grateful for medicare and secondary insurance.

  11. "When I get my hearing aids, will I be able to hear you?"

Six years old. First grade. Teacher across the room. That question was the first time I truly understood I had a hearing loss. Not because someone told me. Because I figured it out myself.

  14. Most people use the word "profound" casually. In audiology, it's the most severe category: you can't hear most sounds without amplification, and even with aids, significant gaps remain.

I didn't understand what that actually meant until well into adulthood.

  15. At four, I was dressed in a sombrero and serape, holding a maraca, and had no idea what anyone was singing.

Even today, with modern hearing aids, I cannot hear lyrics in music. What looked like a distracted kid was the earliest sign of permanent hearing loss.

That preschool moment wasn't a phase. It was the beginning.

  19. 🎉 Wow, the #FDA finally figured out what genes are! 🧬 Their #groundbreaking #approval might just cure your hereditary inability to hear reason. 🤦‍♂️ Let's hope they can gene-edit their way to a solution for selective hearing next. 🙉

  23. Does this product exist?

A microphone that you can connect via Bluetooth to any BT speaker or receiver (like a hearing aid) to make that speaker into a sort of PA system?

It seems so obvious that this should exist. But searching I seem to only find these stupid LLM generated articles, and microphones sold with its own speaker or its own receiver that you need to plug in to an aux input. Am I being stupid?

  25. @david

I have moderate hearing loss which is somewhat beyond age appropriate, I also have left sided tinnitus.

I'm very lazy about wearing my hearing aids but the quality of sound when I'm using them is notably better. When I take them out everything sounds as though it's being filtered through a blanket!
Certainly the world is a very noisy place when I'm using my hearing aids - the greatest joy is hearing birdsong that I miss otherwise.

The aids were tuned by the audiologist to minimise the noise of my tinnitus as well.

  26. Hive mind! My partner has fairly extensive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and is meant to wear hearing aids but found the NHS ones very uncomfortable.

We’re looking at private options, and I’m wondering if anyone in my network has any recommendations for something comfortable that can be worn with glasses.
