Here's a charming verse from Oliver about the month of December.

    I heard a #Bird sing
    In the dark of December.
    A #Magical thing
    And #Sweet to #Remember.
    We are nearer to #Spring
    Then we were in #September,
    I heard a bird sing
    In the #Dark of December.

  2. November 30, 1875
#OTD Frank Meyer, Dutch-American #Plant Explorer, is born.

Frank once confessed in a #Letter to #Friend,

    "I am #Pessimistic by #Nature & have not found a #Road which leads to [#Happiness].
I withdraw from humanity & try to find [happiness] with plants."

Frank was a #Loner & suffered from #Anxiety. He felt more at ease with #Plants than #People. Like many #Gardeners, he even named his plants & #Talked them.

  5. Adelaide Crapsey's legacy is the #Cinquain or the five-lined unrhymed stanza form. She was inspired by the #Haiku.

Adelaide loved the #Simplicity and #Power of Japanese #Poetry.
Her best Cinquain is #November #Night:

    Listen...
    With faint dry sound,
    Like steps of passing #Ghosts,
    The #Leaves, #Frost-crisped, break from the #Trees
    And #Fall.

  6. November 23, 1990
    #OTD Roald Dahl, British #Children’s #Author, died.

    An avid #Gardener, his #Garden #Shed doubled as his #Writing #Nook.
(Roald #Smoked as he wrote. The shed kept the smoke out of the house.)

    Roald once wrote,

    Mary, Mary, quite contrary
    How does your #Garden grow?

“I live with my brat in a high-rise flat,
So how in the world would I know?”

    #OTD #George #Eliot,#English #Victorian #Author, is born.

    She wrote,

    It never #Rains roses.

When we want more roses, we must #Plant more...

  8. I walk down the #Patterned #Garden #Paths
    In my stiff, brocaded #Gown.
With my powdered hair and #Jeweled fan,
    I, too, am a #Rare #Pattern.
    As I #Wander down
    the garden paths.

    - Amy Lowell, American #Poet of the #Imagist school

Amy posthumously won the #Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1926.

  9. You are #Ice and #Fire,
The #Touch of you burns my hands like #Snow.
    You are #Cold and #Flame.
You are the crimson of #Amaryllis,
    The silver of moon-touched #Magnolias.
    When I am with you,
    My #Heart is a #Frozen #Pond
    Gleaming with agitated torches.

  10. Nature's first green is gold,
    Her hardest #Hue to hold.

    Her early #Leaf's a #flower;
    But only so an hour.

    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So #Eden sank to #Grief,

So #Dawn goes down to day.
    Nothing #Gold can #Stay.

  11. Though summers change and pass away -
Though dies the #Beauty of the hill and plain -
Though warmth and color fade each #Autumn day -
#Hope passes not, and abides to say
That our brightest #Joys shall all come again.
