  1. Had a nice, traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. Including main dishes, side dishes, veg, desserts, spices and beverages, our PlantsGiving total of botanical species included came to 44 this year. I've included the list, made in no particular order. Did anyone else try a listing?

  3. Giving thanks for another good year in the garden and for family and friends. BeetBear and his friend Moley are making the list for our PlantsGiving plant tally. The blueberry pie alone has 9 AND the blueberries are home-grown. Pot-o-Carrots still producing too. Lots of food to eat later. Count up those botanicals, people!

  5. I don't need a calendar to tell #Thanksgiving is almost here. The Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumgera truncata) is putting on a show again. Not technically part of Thanksgiving dinner, but part of the decor so I'm including the #Plantsgiving tag as well.

  9. With US Thanksgiving just about a week away, I'm once again participating in #Plantsgiving .This is an idea I first discovered a few years back proposed by Prof. Chris Martine at Bucknell U. Link to old page here:
    forthemedia.blogs.bucknell.edu
The idea is simple: Just record all the botanical ingredients in your thanksgiving meal & share them here with the plantsgiving hashtag. My list last year was 44 species. Helps raise #PlantAwareness among students, family and friends.

  11. So I make that 14 unique families at my #Plantsgiving! Which was a lovely big Friendsgiving potluck in #Seattle. There were going to be 20 of us but then half the guests had to cancel BUT it was the half of who didn’t sign up to cook so … we have a lot of leftovers.

  15. The final results are in. We tallied 44 botanical items that went in to our modest Thanksgiving meal. BeetBear has listed them in alphabetical order in the alt-text. If you include the after-dinner gin ("TheBotanist" from the fine folks on Islay) that adds another 30!
BeetBear and the gang are now back to napping until it's time to Wassail the apple trees.

  17. Our plant tally for PlantsGiving is underway. We are still harvesting our own carrots from the great Pot-O-Carrots and now have had just shy of 100 pulled so far and still more available. We are thankful for much, especially for Family and the chance to be stewards of the family gardening plot.

  21. I convinced #BeetBear to get up and help me list out all of the plants that will be going in to our Thanksgiving meal. This is all part of our #PlantsGiving where we try to acknowledge the contribution the plant kingdom (and fungi) makes to our daily sustenance. Daughter (the actual Botanist) will be home soon to help. It's quite educational to research all the botanicals and list them out. Anyone else want to give it a go? I'll share our list on Friday.

  23. BeetBear is still sound asleep and not helping with the pruning, so onward I go on my own. This is tree number three on my list; a 40-year-old Red Delicious on dwarfing stock. Needed quite a lot of pruning. The remaining 3 trees to prune are much larger standard trees and will be a lot more work. I'm trying to convince #BeetBear to wake up long enough to join in #PlantsGiving on Thurs.. I'd like to see others participate, it's fun!

  27. As we near the US holiday of Thanksgiving, I'd like to once again share the idea of #PlantsGiving where the family keeps track of all the plant-based contributions to the festivities An idea of Chris Martine at Bucknell U. Here's a somewhat dated link to what it's all about.
    forthemedia.blogs.bucknell.edu
When I find my list from last year, I'll share it here. Also it helps that we have an actual botanist in the family.

  31. #Today for all you Botanist types out there, #BeetBear has gifted us a bottle of Isle of Islay "The Botanist" Gin. Many of us here celebrate #PlantsGiving this time of year where we have a feast and try to keep track of how many plant-based items are contributed to the meal. This Gin alone has 22 separate botanicals in it. I'll try to post the final tally when our big meal tomorrow is done I expect we'll have at least 30 species included in the meal PLUS the gin! 😀

  33. @chrisamaphone Plant evolutionary genetics! wright.eeb.utoronto.ca/

It reached me via Deby Katz, whom I know through Amherst College.

Actual plant biologists love goofing off about plants! Check out #Plantsgiving around both American and Canadian Thanksgiving - we compete to see who has the most plant families in their feast! (Spices are really where you get an edge.)

  35. This crew consumed 65 species for #PlantsGiving today. The youngest ate roughly .8 lbs of Vaccinium macrocarpon sauce.

33 families. Lamiaceae and Poacaeae tied for the lead. The Trader Joe’s 21 Seasoning Salute my bro-in-law injected the turkey with was a clutch player.

Also worth noting that the last sentence of the article is appropriate for this platform: "So, dig into your pumpkin pie like a mastodon!"

  40. Too much heaviness to go around lately, but this rube is taking a little bit of comfort from the sun rising over the Atlantic (and my wife). And, later today, by counting #PlantsGiving species with my kids.

  41. You guys! It's going to be my (the?!) first #PlantsGiving on Mastodon!!
