Here are the results of the UK's #NewYearPlantHunt - lots of interesting finds, a few real surprises and ... my finding Rue in Devon got mentioned in a feature on unusual garden escapes! Wow!!

A final 4 of my #TheWinter10 which again are mainly garden escapes. Hebe (with a bee!), Mexican Fleabane, Periwinkle and a garden Cranesbill hybrid. #Dawlish #Devon #TheWinter10 #NewYearPlantHunt #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

Three plants that grow on the sea cliffs at Dawlish. Sour Fig (the new name for a plant that used to have a racial slur in its name), Osteospermum and Seaside Daisy. All garden escapes. #Dawlish #Devon #TheWinter10 #NewYearPlantHunt #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

More of my #TheWinter10 from the #NewYearPlantHunt - Trailing Bellflower and Adria Bellflower, the two common bellflowers of old walls in UK towns. #Dawlish #Devon #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

I exceeded #TheWinter10 by a long way on Friday while doing the #NewYearPlantHunt around Dawlish on the #Devon coast. 23 species in flower despite the cold weather, although a lot of those were garden escapes. The highlight was Rue, which isn't grown much in gardens so is extremely rare as a pavement plant. But there it was in full flower in a pavement beside a roadside flower bed.

Had planned another #NewYearPlantHunt today, but cold weather, residual snow and the need to recuperate from Thursday have nixed it.
Two days of sub-zero temperatures will zap quite a few flowers too.
-
Despite doing some long recces, I found my actual #NewYearPlantHunt tough going. Saw 66 species in flower (around 6 fairly marginal) and failed to get to 2 others (Ivy & Small Nettle) in the allotted 3 hours. Also missed Tansy seen a few days earlier.
First plant of the day : abundant Winter.Heliotrope by Geography, University Park. Last plant: Smooth Hawksbeard.

Found some gorse in flower on today's walk for #NewYearPlantHunt and #WildflowerKO2026.
Nothing else today, though there was a good layer of fresh snow covering the ground, so more flowers could have been hiding beneath! -
Spotted in flower today:
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
Rape (Brassica rapus)
Scentless mayweed (Tripleurospermum inodurum)
Meadow buttercup (Ranunculus acris)
Daisy (Bellis perennis)
Ragwort (Jacobaea vulgaris) -
Hoping to get out and look for #Wildflowers later for the BSBI New Year Plant hunt if there's a good enough gap in the weather! #NewYearPlantHunt. https://bsbi.org/take-part/activities/new-year-plant-hunt
I'm also planning to keep note of all the flowers I see in January, then see which are still flowering in February, March etc. to see if I can see any all year round. Anyone want to join me? I'm using the tag #WildflowerKO2026 I loved doing #YearIfDaisy last year, inspired by #YearOfGorse, wondered what else may be possible😊

Flabbergasted to see Hazel catkins open this early in December. It's only 13 years ago, but finding these flowers open on my first #NewYearPlantHunt on New Year's Day 2013 was quite hard.
These particular plants have been flowering before Christmas in recent years, but, I think, not as early as this.
-
@chillly With me the first ones will be open in around a month's time. I've nearly always had one Hazel flower for #newyearplanthunt.
The Hazels in the garden tend to open around 21st Jan.
Both the genetics and location affect flowering time for individual trees.

The highlight of my #NewYearPlantHunt, not least because it's actually native, was probably this very late-flowering Sea Campion. Near a footpath from the main road to the sea wall between Dawlish and Dawlish Warren. #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

I don't normally manage #TheWinter10 for #WildflowerHour but in #Dawlish on new year's eve for the BSBI #NewYearPlantHunt I recorded 30! Plus Common Rue, which I was hoping for, did flower but a few days after the deadline. Most of the species I saw were either invasives or garden escapes. These 4 are Wall Bellflower, "Sour Fig" (no, I'm not using the usual English name), Osteospermum sp and Hebe (Veronica sp). #Devon #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

We got wonderful sunshine for the
Kent Field Club #NewYearPlantHunt
at Milton Creek Country Park and surrounds. Some cheery little flowers, a queen bumblebee (not photographed), a few dung flies using Apiaceae, some birds enjoying the estuary, some fun fungi. -
Met up with some old friends for a Sunday afternoon walk near Speen, Berkshire, so made it my #NewYearPlantHunt. Spotted 9 species in flower: Wild carrot, Nipplewort (pictured), Garlic mustard, Wood avens, Thale cress, Snowdrop (probably garden escape), Periwinkle (ditto), White dead-nettle, and ...

@mhaklay Chris Preston actually repeated the route he took for #NewYearPlantHunt for a year http://bsbipublicity.blogspot.com/2020/02/british-irish-botany-vol-2-issue-1-out.html?m=1

#NewYearPlantHunt done today, with 19 species found in flower. Primrose being one of them.

@ultrazool Split one #NewYearPlantHunt into 2x 2 hour sessions on successive days (allows a bit of walking time, pondering, #OpenStreetMap survey) for just under 40 species. Bumped into @[email protected] doing exactly the same!
Highlight, possible Musk Stork's-bill flower.

Daisy seen this week. Usually the most common wildflower found on the #NewYearPlantHunt . Wonder who’ll get the top spot this year? If you’ve never taken part before, have a go this year. 👍 You never know what you might find! https://nyph.bsbi.org

A fantastic (if a tad chilly) seaside walk with this lovely bunch today. A cheeky practice for the BSBI #NewYearPlantHunt. We didn't find too much but it was nice to see Wild Cabbage and some new faces! 🌱🔎
