  25. Eliza Amy Hodgson was a #bryologist who collected specimens throughout the early 20th century in New Zealand. Hodgeson specialized in hepatics and published over 30 scientific papers on varying #liverworts. Although she didn’t have any formal training in botany, she was recognized as a liverworts expert and a part of the British Bryological Society. She collected over 700 #specimens and eventually donated them. In her honor, the species 𝘓𝘦𝘫𝘦𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘨𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 was named after her. 1/2

  26. Throughout his career, he specialized in #liverworts and made many contributions to the Hepaticae genus Frullania. Here in the UTK #Herbarium, we have over 300 #specimens that Sinske Hattori collected himself and plenty more that have come from the Hattori Botanical Laboratory.

  27. Our #GlobalTCN project manager, Miranda Z., researched & put together amazing presentations on many #bryophyte collectors whose #specimens we've digitized. We're going to start sharing these #CollectorProfiles with you as well as links to Miranda's presentations. Stay tuned! #MossMonday

  28. #Freshwater #mussels, many of which are of #conservation #concern, are a great target for #environmental #DNA (#eDNA) detection to guide #management #tactics and #strategies.

But as the authors of this new paper point out: "Confidence in our ability to identify eDNA #metabarcoding reads relies on a #curated, #accurate #database."

Use of eDNA methods various purposes is going to mean a lot of work with #specimens and databases in coming years.

#Namibia 🇳🇦 has yielded many #fossils of #Ediacarans, ~600 million year old #organisms that shed light on the early #evolution of #animals. One iconic #Ediacaran, #Rangea, was first described from Namibia, where a few #specimens are preserved in #3D, giving an idea of what this #ancient #enigma might have looked like when alive.

  30. #December 11, 1843
    #OTD Jacob #Schneck, Indiana #Physician, #Naturalist, & #Botanist, is born.

    Jacob's passion was #Plants & he spent his #SpareTime #Botanizing. He labeled all his #Specimens with his #Impeccable #Handwriting.

He #Spied a unique #Species of #RedOak & told the Botanist Nathaniel Lord #Britton. Britton named the oak in Jacob's honor - Quercus Schneckii, also known as the Schneck #Oak.

Jacob died at 63, tending his patients to the end - despite his own #Pneumonia.

#OTD Howard Scott Gentry, American #Botanist, is born.

The world's leading authority on #Agaves, Howard went to #Mexico every year to collect #specimens & traveled via #Mule.

    The #USDA pursued #Agave & #Wild #Yam #Family to make #Arthritis #Medicine.

    Howard once said:

I refused several times to become a desk man for USDA. It was a chance to cut out all the #Travel, but I told them,
"No, not me. I want to work with #Plants, not people. People are problems."

  32. CW: dead animals from museum collections

My day job mostly revolves around managing the UChicago PaleoCT Lab. This #microCT scanner can achieve resolutions of up to 1 micron and can scan through dense #fossil (though dense fossil at 1 micron would be tricky). I’ve scanned all sorts of things: #fossils (even parts of Sue the t-rex!), bones, alcohol preserved #specimens, meteorites and more!
