In August 1885 a paddock at Noarlunga hosted the first lacrosse match ever played in South Australia, when a team of country footballers who had never seen the game took on the founding Adelaide club. The Noarlunga Lacrosse Club went on to host an intercolonial fixture against Victoria, lapsed for years, and revived under its own veterans in the 1890s.

the #Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) explicitly called their game ( #lacrosse) "little brother of war"
a conscious purposeful substitute for war
the function of sport is to release physical aggression harmlessly
however for the Haudenosaunee, games would range over vast distances and last for days. so sometimes, in the woods, someone would come back bloodied, or not at all. a way of settling scores (rather than war) that was not encouraged, but was understood to be part of the game

i would say though that humanity is extremely tribal
in many respects the outlet of #sports competitions between nations serves as a harmless release valve for what otherwise would be bloodshed and #war
i live in western new york
the indigenous people here have a sport: #lacrosse
their name for lacrosse is "little brother of war"
because the #Haudenosaunee (aka #Iroquois) recognize sports competitions relieve animosities that would otherwise result in real war

The Haudenosaunee Nationals men's team, playing at the 2022 World Games, where they finished 5th. They are currently ranked third in the larger world of Lacrosse, a game that the nations of the Haudenosaunee invented nearly a thousand years ago. It is the oldest organized sport still played in North America.
