I Have The Answer!
I know where Peter Piper’s pickled peppers are! They are in my kitchen. At least, about a third of them are.
I had some peppers in my refrigerator that were not going to be used up before they shrivelled up, so I decided to pickle them. I had pickled some peppers a couple of months previously and was quite pleased with the result, so I decided to use the same recipe again.
I used to do quite a lot of canning when my children were still children, and I have kept the canning bath, the jar grabber, and some jars and lids. So, I was ready!
After the process was complete and the hot jars were cooling on my kitchen counter, I was reminded of the old tongue-twister about Peter Piper that was first published in John Harris’s Peter Piper’s Practical Principles of Plain and Perfect Pronunciation in 1813:
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked;
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?So, that got me wondering, how much is a peck?
When I Googled it, I was told that a peck is 9.3 quarts, which is equivalent to 8801 millilitres. I had five 500-millilitre jars for a total of 2500 millilitres. That, I decided, was near-as-dammit a third of a peck.
So, there you have it. About a third of Peter Piper’s pickled peppers are on my kitchen counter. They are accompanied by some pickled carrots because I had excess brine.
Now to find out why putting things in jars is called canning.

I recently bought some new rubber seals for some old clip-top jars. The jars are perfectly good except their seals have weathered over the years, so I tracked down replacements online.
It was harder than I thought to find the two sizes I needed, 7-9.5cm and 8.5-11cm, in the one shop in Australia at a reasonable price. So if anyone else wants to know, I got them from Biome – about $8 for a pack of six, two sizes, plus shipping, total just under $27.
Four jars already refitted with seals, more as I need to open them for something. Better than throwing the jars out and buying new ones.
NB: I don't have Kilner jars; it doesn't matter as long as the internal / external dimensions roughly match what they're replacing.

@matthijskooijman not sure whether #label getting off in #dishwasher is a #feature, not a #bug. It will stuck on exit #water filter and make trouble, at least that was experience when similar label went off in mine. I don't put #jars in dishwasher anymore for that reason. I wish there was proper recycling for these jars and #lids ...

Handy helper tip!
If you've ever struggled opening a jar, or have noticed that under HRT, your ability to open jars has diminished, try this:
Don't grip tightly until your elbows are sticking out and the jar is closest to your chest. This way, the force is applied at a greater mechanical ratio, and it is applied predominantly from your shoulders, instead of your wrists, elbows, and so on.
Also, buy a she-man. There are some jars that legitimately require one.
