"#Seaweed grazers often get a bad rap for causing devastating loss in #kelp and seaweed habitats. Here, we highlight a positive impact... Small grazers may fulfil an important role in seaweed reproduction, by making sure microscopic gametophytes in the big #ocean can find each other and make babies."

The rockpools glistened, isolated by the retreating morning tide. Murky and full of anemones and molluscs, the occasional terrified crab. I waded in to gather my samples of soil. Measuring microplastic and other 'forever' contaminants

It was slow and tough, the #seaweed tangled and tripped, and I fell to my knees, plunging hands deep into the silt. I sat back and washed them clean. My fingers were missing. Bitten. The water turned dark red. The seaweed moved.

    The perfect crime.
    Deep sea fishing.
Private charter, late night departure, no crew and a couple of buckets of chum.
The whining had finally been silenced when I'd surrendered to the rage she always provoked.
Over the depths I poured the contents of the buckets, then settled in for the night.

A vile stench awakened me to find her reconstituted shredded features capped by #seaweed facing me in the cabin.
"I told you I'd never leave you..."

  7. It's back to the #RockyIntertidal of #Washington's #SanJuanIslands this #MarineLifeMonday, this time to visit an odd #seaweed group. Coralline red #algae are distant relatives of plants, but they're named because they look like some types of #coral. In fact, this similarity is more than skin-deep. Just as coral animals often encase themselves in calcium #carbonate shells, these algae line their cell walls with the same #mineral, making them much more rigid than other #seaweeds.
