A short trip to the Dutch province of #Zeeland to be with the sea and to cut some #seaweed for kitchen experiments. We took part in a workshop and so were permitted to cut seaweed - not allowed otherwise, for good reason.

Some things we learned:

- Always greet the sea.
- Never pick, always cut, scissors are best. This preserves the holdfasts and allows the seaweed to regrow.
- Cut only from the top 25% of the seaweed for maximum regrowth.
- Cut off no more than one third of a piece of seaweed, again for regrowth.
- All seaweeds in the Netherlands are #edible.
- Seaweeds are family, treat them with respect.

We ended up with a nice little treasure chest full of about a dozen species of seaweed. We've fried it, eaten it raw in various permutations, will dry some of it, and keep experimenting.

Warming oceans fuel the spread of Sargassum, a floating seaweed that grows rapidly. It’s escaped its native habitat and is growing huge swaths around the Atlantic and Caribbean. When it dumps on shore, it releases sulfiric fumes that smell terrible and the seaweed itself contains toxic heavy metals.

There are now numerous startups to explore it for carbon sequestration, bio-plastics/construction material, fertilizer, cosmetics…

A record wave of brown, smelly seaweed is washing up on beaches along Mexico's Caribbean coast, forcing closures in top tourist destinations and inflicting mounting economic damage on hotels, restaurants and shops.

Many of us are familiar with foraging for edible plants and useful materials in the bush. Now, a new book by Tasmanian author, Rees Campbell, who wrote Eat More Wild Tasmanian, takes foraging onto our seashores.

Rees’ book focuses on identifying and processing seaweeds for food. It joins a slew of other seashore guide books that would be useful additions to any beachcomber’s library.

This review takes a look at the growing library of identification guides for Tasmanian foragers.

Red algae will NOT eliminate livestock as a problem for combating climate change.

The U.N. has a report stating that the livestock industry contributes more to the greenhouse effect than *transportation*.

One reason is methane.

It was hoped that mixing seaweed into livestock feed would cut methane emissions. Earlier studies showed 90% reductions and higher.

However, this latest and longest running study only showed a 28% reduction.

A guaranteed way to reduce methane emissions from the livestock industry is to minimize meat consumption. Eat less meat.
