  1. A short trip to the Dutch province of #Zeeland to be with the sea and to cut some #seaweed for kitchen experiments. We took part in a workshop and so were permitted to cut seaweed - not allowed otherwise, for good reason.

    Some things we learned:

    - Always greet the sea.
    - Never pick, always cut, scissors are best. This preserves the holdfasts and allows the seaweed to regrow.
    - Cut only from the top 25% of the seaweed for maximum regrowth.
    - Cut off no more than one third of a piece of seaweed, again for regrowth.
    - All seaweeds in the Netherlands are #edible.
    - Seaweeds are family, treat them with respect.

We ended up with a nice little treasure chest full of about a dozen species of seaweed. We've fried it, eaten it raw in various permutations, will dry some of it, and keep experimenting.

  6. All-around very cool story and well worth the read. 💛

    #Nuns & #NativeWomen from the #indigenous #Shinnecook tribe in #NewYork have started a #kelp #farm to help remove #carbon & #nitrogen / #nitrates #pollution from their #ocean waters.

After two years, there are #scallops, #clams, #SeaHorses, and other #MarineLife not seen in years, sheltering the kelp lines.

It's not just an #environmental success story, but of #friendship, #allyship, & support as well. 💪

  7. The Lighthouse and Tidal Treasures

The tide was very far out when we visited Ballycotton last week, so I wandered out on the rocks, carefully avoiding the slippery seaweed, and took a few photos.

  8. The Sherkin Island Fishing Boat

A fishing boat with the registration code C353P sits moored in the low-tide mud in Sherkin Island. It sits opposite the island library and has been a feature of the island for as long as I remember. However, it was missing during a visit in 2017, and this gallery of Sherkin Island photos shows an empty space where the boat should be! A blog post here from 2016 shows the boat back in place, so maybe someone took the boat out during my visit in 2017?

Now I would like to know more about this boat. Who owns it? Does anyone take it out for a spin any more?

You’ll also find photos of this boat elsewhere, including this article about a Ukrainian family who settled on the island. It’s also featured in a painting created in 2012, but it’s sitting on a dock somewhere, possibly local.

  9. #MarineFungi Could Eat #PlasticPollution, Helping to Clean Our #Oceans and #Beaches

Learn more about the marine #fungi that could be conditioned to help clean up #Hawaii’s beaches.

    By Monica Cull
    Feb 14, 2025 4:00 PMFeb 14, 2025 4:01 PM

"Hawaii is home to some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. Striking blue waters, lush jungles, and pristine beaches make it a paradise. It’s also home to other unique inhabitants, such as sea turtles, dolphins, and… plastics?

"According to a new study from the University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Mānoa, plastics are becoming the most prevalent form of pollution in the ocean, which can be detrimental to marine species and their habitat. However, researchers from UH discovered a fungus from Hawai‘i’s nearshore environment that may have the ability to break down plastics, and to top it off, they may be conditioned to do it faster. The findings were recently published in Mycologia.

" 'Plastic in the environment today is extremely long-lived and is nearly impossible to degrade using existing technologies,' said Ronja Steinbach, lead author of the study and a marine biology undergraduate student at the UH Mānoa College of Natural Sciences, in a press release.

"Marine fungi may be a term you’ve never heard before. This is likely due to the fact that less than 1 percent of marine fungi are known to science.

" 'Our research highlights marine fungi as a promising and largely untapped group to investigate for new ways to recycle and remove plastic from #nature. Very few people study fungi in the ocean, and we estimated that fewer than one percent of marine fungi are currently described,' said Steinbach in the press release.

"For this study, the research team looked at marine fungi found in #corals, #seaweed, #sand, and #sponges from Hawai’i’s nearshore. And they hope that the fungi could help degrade plastics in the marine environment.

" 'Fungi possess a superpower for eating things that other organisms can’t digest (like #wood or #chitin), so we tested the fungi in our collection for their ability to digest plastic,' said Anthony Amend, Pacific Biosciences Research Center professor and co-lead author of the study, in a press release.

    The Hungry Fungi

"The team exposed the fastest-growing fungi to small dishes filled with #polyurethane, a common plastic, and noted if and how fast the fungi would consume it. The team also 'experimentally evolved' the fungi to see if they would grow and consume more polyurethane the more they were exposed to the plastic.

" 'We were shocked to find that more than 60 percent of the fungi we collected from the ocean had some ability to eat plastic and transform it into fungi,' Steinbach said in a press release. 'We were also impressed to see how quickly fungi were able to adapt. It was very exciting to see that in just three months, a relatively short amount of time, some of the fungi were able to increase their feeding rates by as much as 15 percent.'

"The research team is currently working to see if these marine fungi can break down other forms of plastics, such as #polyethylene and #PolyethyleneTerephthalate. They’re also trying to understand how, at a molecular level, these fungi can degrade these plastics.

" 'We hope to collaborate with #engineers, #chemists, and #oceanographers who can leverage these findings into actual solutions to clean up our beaches and oceans,' said Steinbach in a press release.

  10. Red algae will NOT eliminate livestock as a problem for combating climate change.

The U.N. has a report stating that the livestock industry contributes more to the greenhouse effect than *transportation*.

    One reason is methane.

It was hoped that mixing seaweed into livestock feed would cut methane emissions. Earlier studies showed 90% reductions and higher.

However, this latest and longest running study only showed a 28% reduction.

A guaranteed way to reduce methane emissions from the livestock industry is to minimize meat consumption. Eat less meat.

  15. Meet the #sargassum belt, a 5,000-mile-long snake of #seaweed circling #Florida

    Key points:

    - Sargassum can contain heavy metals, including arsenic. It has fairly high concentrations of the toxin, that, through leaching, that could impact groundwater.

    - Humans are altering the nitrogen cycle. We're using more fertilizer, burning biomass, cutting down forests and increasing wastewater from cities, all of which sends ammonium, nitrate and phosphate down major river systems

    March 15, 20235:00 AM ET

"In the open sea, healthy patches of sargassum can soak up carbon dioxide and serve as a critical habitat for fish, crabs, shrimp, turtles and birds.

"But if sargassum moves closer to the coast, the #seaweed can wreak havoc on local #ecosystems, smothering #coral reefs and altering the water's pH balance. Once ashore, clumps of sargassum can choke local economies by closing tourism sites, cutting off marinas and constricting fishing yields.

"Sargassum begins to rot after about 48 hours on land, releasing irritants like #hydrogensulfide, a hazard to anyone with respiratory issues like asthma. Oh, and the resulting smell resembles manure or rotten eggs — not a great spring break aroma.

"It used to be that sargassum rafts were disparate, sporadic bodies, causing little disruption to beach-going.

"But scientists noticed a change in sargassum levels in 2011, when masses of the seaweed multiplied, gaining in density and size, becoming so big they were captured on satellite images.

"Today, the patches comprise a 5,500-mile-long, 10 million-ton belt that circulates annually, starting near West Africa and snaking through the Gulf of Mexico back into the Atlantic."
