  1. If moving to another country were to become a long-term prospect due to the threat of war or because my home town is being taken over by other cultures, there would only be a few places in the world I’d want to move to. 😉

Within Germany, that would be islands like Borkum and Baltrum or somewhere on the coast; otherwise, in the mountains, perhaps relatively close to a river or stream. 😊

If I could, in terms of financial means and/or a job, I’d most likely move to Iceland. 😎

I like rugged landscapes with geological features and prefer cooler temperatures to warm or hot ones. 🤩

None of this is anything current or even up for discussion, just some thoughts on the subject that I wanted to get off my chest. 😜

  4. Lewis Hunton: The Boy Who Read the Rocks

Stand on the site of the old Loftus Alum Works and you feel rather small. These 213-metre cliffs are not pretty. For centuries, workers burned shale and processed aluminium sulphate here, poisoning the ground so thoroughly that almost nothing grows. The place looks dead. It seems more of the remains of t ...

  9. Gribdale Gate and the Edge of the Ice

A view from Cliff Rigg looking across to Gribdale Gate and Easby Moor, where the monument to Captain James Cook stands like a stubborn finger pointing at the sky. It is a landscape that seems quiet until you realise how much has happened here while human ...

  10. Recent #geological analysis provides the strongest evidence to date that Stonehenge’s massive stones were transported by humans rather than glacial movement during the Ice Age, effectively debunking the long-standing "glacial transport theory."

  11. What does Schrödinger's cat 🐱 have to do with the age of the #Earth?

Thanks to Schrödinger's equation, radiometric dating and quantum simulations became possible, allowing scientists to measure #geological time and explore Earth's deep interior. It has, in fact, helped build modern Earth #science.

  12. Curtin University researchers have demonstrated a new way to uncover the ancient history of Australia’s landscapes, which could offer crucial insights into how our environment responds to #geological processes and climate change and even where deposits of valuable minerals may be found.

  14. How does #phenotypic #diversity relate to #genomic #evolution over #geological time?
In this #openaccess research article, Yang et al. find that species diversification (SD) in the Fagales (which includes oaks, chestnuts, and walnuts) appears decoupled from both, highlighting the multidimensional nature of SD evolution.

  16. #FootpathFriday
I discovered this old, seaside walkway nestled in a small waterfront pocket park in Esquimalt, 20 years ago. The end of the walkway & rocky beach area has views of CFB Naden, which is beside the park. There's a fence/gate to block access to this concrete footpath now - I climbed around it. I've done many past photoshoots at this location with various models.

  17. We talk a lot about #sea level rise due to #warming and ice melt. That it's not just based on models. We have a robust #geological record of ice melt events to talk about this with relative confidence*.

  18. How did eastern #NorthAmerica form?
North America today is made of several different parts. The west are relatively young and mighty mountain ranges like Sierra Nevada and Rockies. In the middle is ancient heart of the continent, oldest and stablest rocks around. And in the east is the long coastal stretch of the eastern North American margin. Each of these has its own #geological history, but it is the story of the eastern bit that has recently come into sharper focus.

  20. Lake Greenhow: A Forgotten Relic of the Ice Age

Yesterday’s post led me to glaciers, glacial lakes, and the like. At Botton Head, my imagination ran riot.

Difficult as it is to picture now, 10,000 years ago, a glacier covered the Tees Valley before me. The ice sheet, it is well-known, never quite managed to smother the Nor ...

  21. Newtondale: A Gorge Too Big for Its Stream

North Dale sits at the top end of Newtondale, a gorge that stretches all the way to Pickering. Newtondale is an oddity, or so everyone says, because the little Pickering Beck, which now trickles through it, could never have gouged out such a deep, narrow valley. At its tightest points, the valley is only 500 met ...
