A random focus stack i did yesterday, i've only done a few focus stacks (mostly astro focus stacks of Comet Atlas) so i need to practice to make sure i know all the steps before my next workshop...

there were 11 photos in this stack, and i think it still has issues, but sooner or later i've got to figure out how to photograph rocks since i have a huge collection 🤣

City of Rocks State Park is one square mile in the Chihuahuan desert of SW #NewMexico. The boulders were deposited on the plains 34.9 million years ago when one of the volcanoes in the Black Range erupted. Camping, mountain biking, stargazing, hiking, wildlife viewing & birding.

While not directly space-related, this piece of granite gave up its ancient home to help us delve deeper than ever into the Universe.

It comes from Cerro Armazones in the Chilean Atacama desert, the summit of which was levelled ahead of the construction of the 39-metre diameter Extremely Large Telescope by the European Southern Observatory.

I picked it up in 2016 – the telescope is due to come online in 2028 ✨🔭

Luckily for a #rockhound here the stones are all #glacial leftovers (rarely found on the surface, they are buried in soil and turned up by farming, road work etc) and quite varied: lots of quartzite, lots of granite (I bet there are things I'm calling granite that aren't-lots of variety in that zone!), smaller bits of limestone (a lot of gravel is dolomite etc- but small pieces, rarely bigger rocks) and occasional sandstone and others.
