Trustees hike: Charles River Peninsula

On July 11, I visited the #TrusteesOfReservations property #CharlesRiverPeninsula <https://thetrustees.org/place/charles-river-peninsula/> in #NeedhamMA. It’s a lovely property which I recommend. It’s an easy hike, almost entirely flat, and there is a good amount of interesting stuff to see.

La Luz Pottery was a prominent New Mexico ceramics operation established in 1930 by Roland Hazard III. Located in the village of La Luz, north of Alamogordo, the 235-acre factory produced over 80 styles of Southwestern pottery and Spanish-revival architectural tiles before closing in 1949.

The Jemez is one of my favorite day trips. From Corrales, it doesn't take long to get there. The area is visually stunning. The landscape changes dramatically every 10-15 minutes and there are an impressive assortment of things to see and do, depending on interests and time available. 😊

Palácio Nacional da Ajuda somehow wasn't crowded even at peak tourist season, and if you have kids, guided tours are sometimes led by a woman in an enormous pink ball gown playing a princess. Pair it with the nearly-empty 18E tram line, Lisbon's quieter alternative to the 28E.

At 11,973 feet above sea level, Sierra Blanca is the tallest peak in the Sacramento Mountains, with spectacular views of the lower peaks and the Tularosa Basin. From the peak you can see where the black lava flows of Valley of Fire stops right before the dunes of White Sands begins. Stark contrast.

Most of the Sacramento Mountains are limestone. Sierra Blanca is the sole volcano.

Cerrillos, Spanish for "the little hills," was known for mining before Europeans arrived. In fact, Cerrillos has the longest historically intact record of pick and shovel mining in the Southwest. Humans settled in this area as early as 500 A.D. Puebloans discovered gold, lead and turquoise deposits.

Las Conchas Trail is a scenic, dog-friendly hike in the Jemez Mountains. It follows the East Fork of the Jemez River. Starting at an elevation of 8,400 feet, the 5.6 miles out-and-back trail is known for lush meadows, towering rock formations, and excellent wildflower viewing.

We have had a fabulous day today in Yarrawonga & Mulwala with my NZ friend. We visited all 4 op shops & had lunch at a lovely little cafe. Also did a lot of walking along the lakeside on the Mulwala side. I estimate I spent about $40 all up & came home with a pair of jeans, 3 lovely tops, some brand new Natio toiletries still in their boxes & a beautiful Maxwell & Williams mug from the Gardeners collection also still in its box with the tag attached & a gorgeous purple ceramic pie dish with fluted edges. Good morning tooting friends. A not bad 6c when I got up & heading to a credible 14c. Still a little damp & dreary outside but there are glimpses of blue so hopefully it’ll turn out to be a lovely day.
It will probably be lovely anyway no matter the weather. We’re just waiting for our washing to finish & then are heading to Yarrawonga for the day, I did this trip not long ago but my NZ friend hasn’t been there in many years & has asked if we can do that today, so that’s will be our day.
