  1. "A research team led by National Geographic Explorer Sita Manitkoon has discovered a new long-necked dinosaur they estimate was over 88 feet long and weighed nearly 30 tons.

“Initial measurements of the bones excavated suggested that this could be the largest dinosaur ever found in Southeast Asia,” says Manitkoon, a paleontologist at Mahasarakham University in Thailand."

  2. Oldest evidence of dentistry found in 59,000-year-old Neanderthal tooth
    By Ellen Phiddian

Archaeologists have found a hole in a 59,000-year-old tooth, which they say was drilled to treat a painful cavity. The find suggests Neanderthals could perform complex medical procedures.

  8. "For Sir David Attenborough, it was a moment that would shape his childhood – and quite possibly his entire career.
    […]
"There, perfect in every detail, glinting as though it had just been polished, was a coiled seashell… an object of breathtaking beauty," he recalled in 2009. "And my eyes were the first to see it since its occupant died 200 million years ago.""

  14. This week's #NewBooks at the library:
    - I bought a bargain second-hand copy of The Rise and Fall of the Ediacaran Biota, published by the Geological Society
    - To prove it's not all hardcore science here, I visited my friend's new bookshop in Brixham in Devon and snagged myself a copy of SenLinYu's Alchemised, published by Michael Joseph. If you're in the area, go check out Into the West Bookshop, tell them The Inquisitive Biologist sent you.
    - Another second-hand bargain was Cold-Water Corals: The Biology and Geology of Deep-Sea Coral Habitats (yes, these exist!), published by Cambridge University Press.

  19. #Fossils reveal many complex #animals existed before the #CambrianExplosion
More than 539 million years ago, from the #Ediacaran Period, soft, clarinet-shaped animals anchored themselves to the seafloor on disc-shaped bases, swaying alongside stalked animals resembling worms and baskets. These woodwindlike creatures are just a few of those coming to life from a treasure trove of newly discovered fossils in southwestern #China.

  20. "In 2026, a new Cambrian Lagerstätte entered the scene. Paleontologists in southern China uncovered a trove of some of the best-preserved Cambrian fossils to date — a massive collection of 8,681 fossils spanning 153 species — named the Huayuan biota. Many of the Huayuan fossils look similar, if not identical, to those in the Burgess Shale, indicating that these marine ecosystems were connected by global ocean currents.""

  22. This week’s Fossil Friday is a Saurornitholestes tooth from the Dinosaur Park Formation. Saurornitholestes was a small theropod, closely related to Velociraptor, that would have stood about 60 cm tall and measured roughly 1.5 m long in life.

The serrations on this tooth helped it cut more efficiently into the flesh of its prey. This specimen, APS 1986.003, was found west of Iddesleigh by Donald Sabo.
