Went birding with my sister and her friend today, and the friend spotted this WILD behavior: a female brewer’s blackbird catching a fish!!! I’ve seen an American Crow do it, but a blackbird?! So cool!

- Monument pounded into summit of butte: 6,158 ft
- My GPS handset, sitting on top of the monument for 5 minutes: 6,160 ft
- Random dataset of buttes I found on the internet: 6,167 ft

I think I saw the same white-breasted nuthatch this weekend (left) and last May (right)! (If not, it's a big coincidence that my second-ever banded bird sighting is the same species and sex as my first, and lives in the same place.)

We went twice this week to burned locales where the three-toed and black-backed woodpeckers have been seen recently, but while we heard the black-backed, we saw neither.
But today, just visiting a favorite spot, I got to see one of the other species left on the list! Birding doesn’t respond to determination: you just have to keep your eyes wide and love the birds you see!

Also today I saw my second-ever raven family with immatures; and on both occasions they made noises like a troupe of apes. Starting to wonder if this contributed to Bigfoot lore!

“Well, I’ve had amazing kingfisher luck at home and you often report just barely seeing them here,” I said, explaining why I took time out from photographing the family of 3 to make hand-signals to my mom.
15 minutes later, I watch one (the young princefisher?) dive into Tumalo Creek, then track it up with my lens to the branch where it perches to rest and sharpen its beak…15 feet from my mom’s picnic bench. 😍😍😍
