The vog had passed across Vatnajökull glacier on its way from the Holuhraun eruption of Bárðarbunga and had cooled, most of the steam had condensed and the gases - mainly SO₂ CO₂ and H₂S - had separated. The lighter sulphurous gases can be seen above while the heavier ones formed a layer over the water.

Due to the shallow depth, the area often freezes quite early in the season. By the end of winter - in about March - the frozen mud and ice are iron hard.
