  1. 20/04/2025 - A Sunday morning stroll to the bottle bank again (I eat a lot of jam and those jars keep building up).

It's that time of year again when one of my favourite small things start to show, Common Liverwort. It just looks like it's from a different planet.

  2. Thousands of #trees planted in #Devon to start creation of Celtic rainforest

"They used to cover large parts of #Britain... The mature temperate #rainforest will take several decades to become established, but the gains for nature will be much swifter... #TemperateRainforests support an abundance of #wildlife including #birds while their damp conditions mean #mosses, #liverworts, #lichens, #ferns and #fungi thrive on the trees as well as the forest floor."

  3. A few Bryophytes we saw on our walk yesterday up a hill. So many nice ones but it was a bit chilly to stay in one place for long to get a good look. Very wet underfoot, good for mosses not so great for my boots!

Quick snaps and a few dodgy guesses at ID.

    Alpine clubmoss
    Toothed peatmoss
    Tamarisk scalewort
    Scaly pelt lichen

  4. 21/04/2024 - A Sunday stroll to the bottle bank to get rid of the evidence. On the way back we started looking at tiny things. A 20 min walk turned into 7 hrs. Peaceful, slow and even the rain held off. A good day.

My new favourite tiny thing - Common Liverwort. This stuff is fantastic. Like something out of a 50s sci-fi film.

  5. Eliza Amy Hodgson was a #bryologist who collected specimens throughout the early 20th century in New Zealand. Hodgeson specialized in hepatics and published over 30 scientific papers on varying #liverworts. Although she didn’t have any formal training in botany, she was recognized as a liverworts expert and a part of the British Bryological Society. She collected over 700 #specimens and eventually donated them. In her honor, the species 𝘓𝘦𝘫𝘦𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘨𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 was named after her. 1/2

  6. Throughout his career, he specialized in #liverworts and made many contributions to the Hepaticae genus Frullania. Here in the UTK #Herbarium, we have over 300 #specimens that Sinske Hattori collected himself and plenty more that have come from the Hattori Botanical Laboratory.

    4 lab grown liverworts

    Marchantia polymorpha, grows like fire

Marchantia berteroana, beautiful big green thallus

Marchantia foliacea, some like it wet

Lunularia cruciata... a difficult liverwort to tame but it's also shockingly resistant to extremes
