Mosses (Bryophyta) have been around for around 500 million years, its thought dinosaurs encountered and ate them incidentally while browsing. Since moss lack internal "plumbing" (xylem and phloem). @ReedLindwurm Per this article Splachnum ampullaceum has photosynthetic plastids ... but there's no mention of photosynthetic rate relative to other mosses. I'm assuming the moss gets nutrients from insects but carbohydrates from photosynthesis. From the paper it seems that the color is from an overproduction of yellow and red pigments (attractive to insects), and perhaps that masks the presence of chlorophylls. Some people might wonder what I get up to for my #PhD... Because I'm an interdisciplinary student, I work on plenty of different things as part of my work. I was able to work on my #Bryophyte (#Moss and/or #Liverwort) specimens at the #RBGE (Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh) Herbarium, which was *absolutely* fantastic!

#Sphagnum in two tones from the fall field season: Golden-brown hues of Sphagnum compactum on a seepy ledge in neUS; ruby-red of Sphagnum rubellum in a nearby bog. Such sn amazing & globally-significant genus!
