Moss has been important part of my photography journey. I found this Dicranum, sprinkled with icy crystals in February, on the forest floor in Vancouver's Stanley Park.
I love how macro photography gets you seeing whole new tiny worlds, even in the most familiar of places.

Mosses (Bryophyta) have been around for around 500 million years, its thought dinosaurs encountered and ate them incidentally while browsing. Since moss lack internal "plumbing" (xylem and phloem). They absorb water and nutrients directly by leaves taking them from the atmosphere, rainwater, and dust. #plants #nature #biology #photo #forests #Bryophyte #ecology #science

@ReedLindwurm Per this article Splachnum ampullaceum has photosynthetic plastids ... but there's no mention of photosynthetic rate relative to other mosses. I'm assuming the moss gets nutrients from insects but carbohydrates from photosynthesis. From the paper it seems that the color is from an overproduction of yellow and red pigments (attractive to insects), and perhaps that masks the presence of chlorophylls.
