  1. When the Mountain Wept: What Nepal’s Floods Teach Us About Preparedness, Caution, and Humanity

    On the morning of August 26, 2026, a glacier high in the Himalayas collapsed.
    The rockfall was so violent that it registered as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. A torrent of ice, rock, mud, and debris surged down the Bhotekoshi River, tearing through villages, bridges, roads, and hydropower plants across Nepal and Tibet. Entire communities were swallowed in minutes.
    As of August 31, the confirmed death toll has crossed 900. More than 3,000 people remain missing. Among them are hundreds of foreign nationals — pilgrims, trekkers, and workers from over a dozen countries, including at least 275 Indians. Bodies have been found as far as 250 miles downstream from the disaster zone. Morgues in Nepal are overflowing. Mass burials have begun before families could identify their dead.
    This is not just Nepal’s tragedy. It is a warning. And India needs to listen.
    What happened?
    The disaster was triggered by a glacial collapse along the Nepal-Tibet border. Scientists studying satellite images found that bedrock beneath a glacier had given way, taking part of the glacier with it. The resulting flood surged through the Trishuli river system, devastating districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Chitwan in Nepal.
    The destruction was staggering. A 42-kilometer stretch of the main highway linking Kathmandu to the Rasuwagadhi border crossing was destroyed at multiple points. At least 14 hydropower projects were damaged, with a combined capacity of approximately 748 MW. Nine bank branches were swept away. Entire villages vanished under thick gray-brown sediment.
    Among the missing are 933 workers from hydropower projects — people who went to work that morning and never came home. Rescue teams have been drilling through debris to reach workers believed trapped in a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydroelectric site, inserting pipes into the passage in a desperate attempt to reach survivors.
    A worker named Surendra Dowluri, 33, from Andhra Pradesh, described what happened at the Upper Trishuli-1 site: “We heard a very loud sound… and saw that the turbine floor was submerged with slush, and six workers were stuck in that. We managed to rescue five of them, but one person lost his life.”
    He was one of the lucky ones.
    The second disaster: disease and injury
    When floodwaters recede, the danger doesn’t end. It transforms.
    Floodwater is not clean rainwater. As it moves through homes, streets, and fields, it picks up sewage, animal waste, chemicals, sharp debris, and dangerous objects. For the thousands of people now living in crowded shelters without access to safe drinking water or functioning sanitation, the risk of disease is immediate and severe.
    Health organizations including the WHO have identified the following post-flood risks:
    Waterborne diseases: Contaminated water can cause diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis A. Young children and the elderly are most vulnerable, and dehydration can develop within hours.
    Wound infections: Even small cuts exposed to floodwater can become seriously infected. Flood debris carries sharp objects — glass, metal, splintered wood — that can cause deep wounds. In contaminated water, these wounds can lead to bacterial infections, and in some cases, tetanus.
    Leptospirosis: A bacterial infection spread through water contaminated with animal urine. It enters the body through cuts, scratches, or mucous membranes. It is a recognized post-flood risk that many people don’t know about.
    Skin infections: Repeated contact with dirty floodwater causes skin irritation and infections, especially on the feet and legs of people wading through debris to salvage belongings.
    Mosquito-borne diseases: Stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Dengue and malaria risk rises in the weeks following a flood, not the days.
    Respiratory infections: Crowded temporary shelters with poor ventilation create ideal conditions for respiratory illnesses to spread.
    Mental health: The trauma of losing family members, homes, and livelihoods doesn’t end when the water recedes. Anxiety, depression, and PTSD can surface weeks or months later — especially in children.
    Three health posts were fully damaged and one hospital partially damaged in the floods. Access to two more hospitals was cut off. For people in remote areas, medical help is now hours or days away — if it comes at all.
    What India should learn
    Nepal’s disaster is not a distant news story. It is a mirror held up to India’s own vulnerabilities. Here’s what we need to understand:
    1. The Himalayas are changing — and not slowly.
    The glacial collapse that triggered this flood is linked to climate change. Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal noted that despite contributing only 0.1% of global emissions, Nepal’s people have become major victims of climate change. India, which shares the same Himalayan range, faces the same threat. Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are a growing risk across Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. The 2013 Kedarnath floods and the 2023 South Lhonak Lake breach in Sikkim were warnings. Nepal’s tragedy is the latest — it will not be the last.
    2. Early warning systems save lives — but only if they work.
    One of the most painful aspects of this disaster is that many deaths may have been preventable with better early warning. Nepal’s Prime Minister has ordered an inquiry into early-warning failures. Flood warning notices were sent to people’s phones — but only after the first wave had already hit. For India, the lesson is clear: invest in upstream monitoring, glacial lake mapping, and real-time alert systems that reach the last village, not just the district headquarters.
    3. Disaster preparedness is not a luxury — it is a necessity.
    Nepal has mobilized 20,000 security personnel, helicopters, and international aid. But the scale of this disaster has overwhelmed even those resources. India must invest in community-level disaster preparedness: training local volunteers, stocking emergency supplies in vulnerable areas, and practicing evacuation routes before disaster strikes, not after.
    4. India-Nepal solidarity is not optional.
    India has responded quickly — sending four flights carrying 68.5 tonnes of relief materials, a 19-member forensic team to help identify bodies through DNA analysis, and an 11-member team to assist with tunnel rescue operations. Over 108 Indians have been rescued so far. This is the right thing to do. But solidarity should not begin only after a disaster. India and Nepal share rivers, mountains, and climate risks. Cooperation on disaster management, glacial monitoring, and emergency response should be a permanent partnership, not a reactive one.
    Practical safety advice for everyone
    Whether you live near a river in India or plan to travel to the Himalayas, here are essential precautions that could save your life:
    Before a flood:

    Know your area’s flood risk. If you live near a river or in a low-lying area, identify the nearest higher ground.

    Prepare an emergency kit: non-perishable food, water for 3 days, medicines, first aid supplies, flashlight, batteries, and copies of important documents in a waterproof bag.

    Save emergency numbers on your phone. In India, the national emergency number is 112. In Nepal, the flood and weather information line is 1155.

    Keep your phone charged and carry a power bank during monsoon season.
    During a flood:

    Move to higher ground immediately. Do not wait for instructions if water is rising.

    Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Just 2 feet of water can sweep away a car. Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult down.

    Floodwater can hide electrical hazards, open manholes, and sharp debris. Assume it is dangerous.

    If you are in a vehicle and it fills with water, get onto the roof.

    If trapped in a building, go to the highest level. Do not enter an enclosed attic where you could be trapped by rising water.
    After a flood:

    Do not drink tap or well water until authorities confirm it is safe. Use boiled or bottled water.

    Discard any food that has come into contact with floodwater.

    Wash any wounds immediately with clean water and soap. Cover them with a clean dressing. Seek medical attention if a wound becomes red, swollen, or painful.

    Wear protective footwear and gloves when cleaning up. Rubber boots are ideal.

    Do not touch fallen power lines. Report them immediately.

    Watch for snakes and other animals displaced by floodwater.

    Keep children away from floodwater at all times.
    If you are travelling in the Himalayas:

    Check weather forecasts before trekking. Postpone trips if heavy rain is expected.

    Inform someone of your route and expected return time.

    Avoid riverbanks, bridges, and unstable slopes during and after heavy rain.

    Carry a first aid kit, water purification tablets, and a charged power bank.

    Register with your embassy if you are a foreign national travelling in Nepal.
    The bigger question
    Nepal’s Finance Minister has said the country will need $4-5 billion to rebuild. For a nation of 30 million people already under economic pressure, this is devastating. The US, UK, Canada, EU, and others have pledged aid. India has been among the first responders.
    But rebuilding is not enough. We need to ask harder questions:

    Why are glacial collapses becoming more frequent in the Himalayas?

    Why are early warning systems still failing in 2026?

    Why do we treat disaster response as news entertainment instead of a call to prepare?

    Why do we wait for a tragedy to care about the people who live in the mountains?
    India is not immune. The same Himalayas that wept in Nepal stretch across our northern border. The same rivers flow through our plains. The same climate crisis is reshaping our future.
    A Great India is not one that looks away when its neighbour suffers. A Great India is one that prepares, that cares, and that acts — before the water comes.
