  2. Hype for the Future 162F: City of Edna, Texas

Introduction The City of Edna is a community located within—and the county seat of—Jackson County, Texas. Today, the community is associated with United States Route 59 (future Interstate 69) and Texas State Highways 111 and 521, with Lake Texana covering the historic site of Texana, Texas, to the east. The Jackson Inn is located nearby, with the local Texana Museum largely located within city limits. Future Interstate 69 The community of Edna provides access to United States Route 59, […]

  3. YEAH! 🎉
Today #BEN-EAF kick-offs as collaboration of Eurac Research, South Tyrol (#AlpSoil_Lab) and the James Hutton Institute (#EnB group), Scotland.

We will identify alpine #SoilFauna in the Highlands using traditional and modern #eDNA methods.

    Stay tuned!

  4. There are plenty of actions to study the ocean, including mapping the #seabed, #eDNA expeditions, satellite observations, #bluecarbon studies, etc.

  5. #eDNA Environmental DNA
The Core Concept: A non-invasive monitoring technique that detects the presence of species by extracting and analyzing genetic material shed into the environment (water, soil, air) rather than isolating the organism itself.

Key Distinction/Mechanism: Unlike traditional ecology which relies on physical capture or visual observation ("macro-organismal" interaction), eDNA focuses on the "molecular" traces—such as mucus, skin cells, and gametes—organisms leave behind, effectively reading the environment as a biological archive.

Origin/History: Initially developed in the 1980s as a niche method for identifying soil microbes, it has since evolved into a global surveillance network for monitoring macro-organisms across diverse ecosystems.

  6. Free online symposium on using environmental DNA to detect insects. Feb 13, 2026, 11:30-3:30 EST. Multiple talks will be given by eDNA researchers, on bees, butterflies, pollinator networks, and more.

There will be a panel at the end if you have any questions about using eDNA in your own work.

Interviewt wurden u. a. Biologinnen der Uni Innsbruck zum Projekt "Frosch im Wassertropfen".

  8. Congratulations to our former #MSCA fellow and microbial ecologist Magdalena Nagler for being one of three winners of the Junior Research Award South Tyrol. 🦠🏅🏞️

Looking forward for new collaborations and insights in #eDNA of soils.

  9. During the annual #salmon run last fall, University of Washington researchers pulled salmon #DNA out of thin air and used it to estimate the number of fish that passed through the adjacent river.

  12. New #research: Can we trace development stages and ecology of a #permafrost thaw lake throughout the Holocene? Using an innovative combination of sedimentary proxies (ancient #DNA, #diatoms, #XRF), @Iza_bai et al. show: Yes, we can!

Long-term evolution of Central #Yakutia's vital #alaas #thermokarst lakes is traced throughout past millennia. This may help understand future pathways of culturally important lake systems!

  13. #Environmental #DNA (#eDNA) is increasingly used for rapid #biodiversity assessments in a variety of contexts.

This review paper (Shea et al. 2023) on the use of eDNA assessments in #marine #ecological #research shows just how rapidly its use is increasing – #exponential!
