Happy birthday Rosalind Franklin (1920 – 1958), #chemist & x-ray #crystallographer whose x-ray diffraction images were instrumental to discovering double-helix structure of #DNA, made important contributions to #carbon & #virus research, was 1 of the great scientists of the 20th century.
Watson’s bio lead some to (inaccurately) joke, “What did Watson and Crick discover?” “Rosalind Franklin’s notes.” While it’s important 🧵1/

Happy birthday to pharmaceutical #chemist Alice Ball (1892-1916) who developed 1st effective treatment for #leprosy. Though her life was cut tragically short, her research saved 1000s from exile & painful, ineffective lifelong treatment for leprosy, & she was a trailblazer for both women & Black scientists.
Ball studied #chemistry at UW earning a BSc & 2nd degree in pharmacy 2 years later. 🧵 -

Hey, can I get a #chemist on the line? Maybe one with #cosmetic or #polymer knowledge?
So, I have psoriatic arthritis, and a manifestation is a degradation of my nails. And I was looking into a product, which is advertised as "beneficial" to one's nails, which is not a thing associated with manicure products.
It is a #uv cured gel, but rubberized in some way.
Here's the thing, all of these "gel" or uv cured products appear to be #resin.
Am I wrong in assuming that both long term exposure to resin and UV is incredibly dangerous? When I've done resin work, I've been fully masked and gloved and all of the safety sheets say to avoid skin contact. I stopped working with it because of safety and environmental concerns.
How is nail resin any more safe?

When I was a little Bachelor student #Chemist, I wished to one day #publish in #Angewandte. Now one of my papers got accepted there. The funny thing: I am not as happy about it as I think I should be. #phd

@futurebird @michaelgemar I really want to know the range of molecules they use for these signals, how are they changing them? What functional groups are involved?

@ireneista @JessTheUnstill Alright! Hopefully last ping (unless further questions idk)
1. https://www.thevillagepharmacy.ca/organize-your-medications
2. https://medicineshoppeelbow.ca/medication-management/So! I was ignoring the phrase 'blister packs' because I was thinking of the sheets you get in any medication box.
No, apparently.
(Canadian, at least) pharmacies refer to "personalised pill packs" as blister packs.

Just ported 5 of the #biblatex compound numeric styles. I've not tested them myself, and I'm pretty far from a #chemist.
Would be cool if people who actually use these sorts of styles could test and report.

@QuantumDot2 @GetzlerChem @breitwieser +1 petrol smell liking! Diesel less so, kerosene pretty ok from what I remember (haven't um sniffed that in a while). Uh is this a #chemist marker? Are our histones and DNA methylated for this?
And yes also model kits that I really wanted to work on - but just had one (too) early on and made a mess. -

Happy birthday to Russian #chemist Dmitri Mendeleev (1834 – 1907) who published the periodic table. Born in Siberia, the youngest child of a large family, his father was a school principal until he lost his sight & job. His mother then restarted her family’s abandoned glass factory to support them. His father died & factory was destroyed by fire. Despite economic hardship, 13 year old Mendeleev attended the Gynasium in Tobolsk.🧵

Happy birthday to chemistry trailblazer Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier (20 January 1758 – 10 February 1836), wife and collaborator of French scientist Antoine Lavoisier (26 August 1743 – 8 May 1794).
The Lavoisiers, working closely together, modernized and quantified chemistry and the scientific method, named oxygen and hydrogen, explained the role that oxygen plays in combustion, helped modernize 🧵

Merry Christmas. I'm still bewildered #ClarkGriswold is a #chemist as revealed in #NationalLampoonsChristmasVacation. Would they ever make a movie about Clark in grad school? Or would #NationalLampoon magazine write an experiment or thesis in his voice? Are there any scientists so dopey? #christmasvacation

Day 6 of #artAdventCalendar is my portrait of Claudine Picardet (1735-1820) #chemist, #mineralogist, meteorologist & perhaps most importantly, translator of latest science from Swedish, English, German, Italian & possibly Latin to French at the height of the chemical revolution.
She married barrister & member of the Académie royale des sciences, arts, et belles-lettres de Dijon, Claude Picardet in 1755, 🧵

Happy birthday to Marie Skłodowska-Curie (1867 – 1934, Polish-born, naturalized-French #physicist & #chemist at work in her lab. The contents of her lab glassware appropriately glow-in-the-dark!

I took down all my spooky molecular model decorations and decided to be a bit seasonal with something else.
I present...tryptophan.
Just in time for Thanksgiving season.

More Spooky Season décor!
Time to get even spookier. It is tetrachloroethylene (PCE). OOOOOH!
PCE is a chlorinated organic contaminant that, oddly, gets more toxic as it breaks down.
On point with the Halloween theme!

Spooky Halloween décor for my office.
Not the skull, the pyridine model! The purple ball is meant to be nitrogen.
Pyridine is an organic contaminant often derived from coal tar. Have you smelled that chemical before? Oof, smells like rotten fish.
