#Alfred #Wegener (died November 1930 in Greenland) was a #German #geologist, #polarexplorer, and #meteorologist. He is primarily known for his #theory of #continentaldrift, which has significantly influenced modern theories of #platetectonics. Fossil discoveries and similar calving fronts along the west coast of #Africa and the east coast of #SouthAmerica led him to his theory, which is still crucial for understanding the #evolutionaryhistory of life on Earth.

The geology of the ocean floor is truly spectacular — perhaps even more than land geology. Unfortunately, it's really hard to study.

  11. @GuillaumeRossolini It should be possible also for old houses. For example, making a hole in the middle of the bottom floor and burying pipes there. It seems difficult to calculate anything due to different underground types and irregularities. Who could help us? #geology #geologist ? This project is very insightful for the DIY: diygreenbuildingwithjerry.blog

Day 12 #artAdventCalendar is my #linocut of brilliant trailblazing US #geologist & prof Florence Bascom (1862-1945) who championed women’s education, & used polarizing microscopes for detailed petrographic analysis to show that rocks previously identified as sedimentary were in fact metamorphosed volcanic rocks she called aporhyolite (implying a change in rhyolite, a silica rich igneous rock, as in her thin sections 🧵

  17. Calling on Scotland folks who know the geology and/pre-historic past. I saw an unusual rock picked up on the beach in Scotland and have the area listed. Ayershire and Inverclyde. Not usual for me to be this stumped on an ID. Ideas? I’ll go back there in Reddit to pass along any ideas. #Geology #Geologist #Scotland #Mineral #Rock #Archaeology #Reddit

  19. For Day 16 #sciArtSeptember prompt rift: my portrait of #geologist & oceanographic #cartographer Marie Tharp (1920-2006), whose pioneering, thorough & complete ocean floor maps with Bruce Heezen, made using realms of echo sounder data, revealed the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

After studying #geology & math, Maurice ‘Doc’ Ewing at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia hired her to draft 1000s of echo sounder profiles.

  24. OilFinancier

Petroleum engineers and geologists usually add an economic analysis to their projects to determine the economic viability. But these professionals are seldom held to account because they have moved on from their projects.

This simulation accelerates the time line. An inept economic analysis means failure in this simulation.

  26. Happy birthday to #geologist & #paleontogist Alice Wilson (1881-1964).

A job in the Mineralogy Division of the U of Toronto Museum was her entry into #geology. In 1909 as a museum assistant with Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), in Ottawa, she catalogued & labelled invertebrate paleontology collections. After completing her BSc in ‘11 she was 1st woman offered a position at GSC & 1st female geologist in #Canada. 🧵1/n

  28. Looking for a Fediverse #geologist. My wife found this interesting rock near Quebec city with an impregnated nodule. We got it out then broke it in half revealing a bright metallic interior. Is it iron or something else?
    See replies for density.
