Is intelligence something a system either has or lacks? A single quantity? A collection of abilities?
In my new article, I distinguish four conceptions of intelligence: binary, scalar, multidimensional, and architectural.
I argue that intelligence is best understood through the mechanisms, layers, representations, pathways, and control processes of an information-processing architecture.
Different architectures may support different kinds of intelligence—not merely more or less of the same thing.
