condition féminine, nation, antisémitisme, armée, colonialisme, Église, marxisme…

Il contient tant de colère, tant d’impitoyables jugements, que, sans surprise, ce livre fut d’abord refusé par les éditions de la Revue Blanche . Le 16 mars 1881, devançant l'appel, il s'engage à l'armée, dans le deuxième escadron du Train. Le 23 mai 1883, son insoumission l'envoie pour 33 mois à Biribi, un bataillon disciplinaire en Tunisie.

En effet de 1891 à 1897, il disparaît, voyage en Belgique, en Allemagne et en Angleterre, Londres en particulier, d'où il revient avec le manuscrit de son roman, Le Voleur. Redécouvert en 1955, c'est ce dernier qui lui assure la postérité.

En plus de ses romans, Darien est le pamphlétaire le plus virulent de cette fin de siècle. Il collabore à plusieurs revues anarchistes, parmi lesquelles L'Escarmouche (dont il fut l'unique rédacteur), L'Ennemi du peuple et L'En dehors, où il côtoie Zo d'Axa.

En 1906 et en 1912, George Darien se présente aux élections législatives en tant que « candidat de l'Impôt Unique », entendant ainsi porter les idées de Henry George dans le premier arrondissement de Paris, auxquelles il échoue.

Son roman Le Voleur est adapté au cinéma par Louis Mallle en 1967 avec Jean-Paul Belmondo dans le rôle de Georges Randal
