  1. We had a visitor in the back yard early this evening. This is a young white-tailed jackrabbit (which is a species of hare, not a true rabbit) probably from this spring's first batch, so he's probably about 3 months old. The proportions are different from an adult. This species is also known as prairie hare or "white jack", or just "jack" hereabouts.

This one was sitting in the long grass and then sat up when I came into view. He wasn't scared, but kept a wary eye on me. Pardon the lousy picture quality; I didn't get out the Big Lens so this is a tiny crop out of the middle of the frame. I have a little video I might post later.

Of course, he immediately started being cute(r), having a bath, after I put the camera away.

Pardon the weeds; it's been too hot and humid to mow lately, and I went chemical-free a few years ago.

  2. Zelda was feeling a little off today. She just hunkered by my feet most of her roam time.

So I took a toes out Tuesday photo for her…

(She seems to be feeling better now, was just very skittish earlier :bunneawwheart: )

  3. I wanted to save this for Bunny Butt Friday, but (a) I'll forget, (b) the Mastodon web UI doesn't expose the scheduled-post functionality, and (c) I think this qualifies as toes-out.

    This is George.

    George is a Big Bun.

    George is a Wide Load.

Sorry for the mediocre photo; it was taken in low evening light.

  4. Finally, one good photo of yearling Cottontail. She's so pretty.

FYI though: this was taken at a distance of about 30 feet, with a digital zoom camera on my phone. I don't use the flash on the bunnies. I also don't feed them, don't talk to them, and generally leave them to their wild bunny business. I have made no attempt to "tame" them, so it's really interesting that they have decided to make my yard their seasonal home. They are not concerned about me, my car, or my dog (who is always on a leash, when we are outside).
