Proboscis extension reflex (PER) is fairly well known in honeybees/bumblebees now - bee learns to associate a stimulus (e.g. odour) with food, and starts extending the proboscis when it smells the odour, even without food. It’s #introduction time! I’m Hannah, I’m leading the Lab of Colourful Animals at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. We work together to understand the role that toxins play in driving the evolution of new adaptations in predators and prey. We research poison frogs in Costa Rica; snakes that eat toxic toads; milkweed plants, milkweed herbivores, and the predators of these herbivores.

#AssistantProfessor at U. of North Texas #UNT. I study #BehavioralEcology (#BehaviouralEcology) and #CommunityEcology with #insect #pollinators. My lab focuses on how #GlobalChange affects pollinator communities and the interactions within those communities, including #bee #foraging behavior.

Current projects study pollinators in #rangeland and #SocialInformation use across insect functional groups. Also collaborating with #TPWD to assess #conservation status of TX #NativeBees.

Tetragonula stingless bees are the main potential alternative to honeybees for crop #pollination in #Australia. Very little is known on #stingless #bee mating and queen #behaviour. I was very happy to support student and stingless bee specialist Francisco Bulle Bueno during his work.
