We over-use antibiotics & this is driving bacterial resistance;
Ara Darzi points out:
'Much of our antibiotic use is blind: we prescribe without knowing whether an infection is bacterial because the rapid molecular tests that could tell us are expensive.
[So] Reform how we pay for diagnostics & reimburse the test for an infection as readily as the prescription itself, and we would cut wasteful use, slow resistance & reduce demand'
