God I love my Spanish and Greek friends but like always when I get an infection I need to sit in pain for 2 weeks because doctors in those countries and more fling out #antibiotics like its candy. We investigated how #enzymes in the #nonribosomal #biosynthesis of life-saving #peptide #antibiotics can be engineered.
Assuming that #promiscuity serves as a springboard for #evolution, we measured the specificity profiles of hundreds of mutants. The results revealed remarkable shifts in substrate specificity in multiple directions, highlighting the evolutionary potential of these enzymes and leading the way for engineering antibiotic biosynthesis.

A #Superbug is a strain of #Bacteria that has become resistant to most #Antibiotics commonly used today. This means infections caused by superbugs are harder to treat than those caused by non-resistant bacteria.

Andrew Jones and Joshua Prince at Duke University developed a model that replicates #PeripherySequestration in #biofilms by accounting for heterogeneity of antibiotic attachment sites and porosity.

In the image we show how the heterogeneous distribution of the different matrix elements and the #bacteria themselves act as barrier against #antibiotics (in red), hindering their effect.
