  2. Mexican pygmy grasshopper (Clypeotettix mexicanus) on the banks of the Mississippi River. Like many species in the Tetrigidae it grazes on stranded river algae, so that's why it was there. In related news they are fairly good swimmers compared to other grasshoppers, in part due to expanded hind tibiae. Apparently not uncommon to find them partly submerged and seemingly pretending to be frogs, complete with fake poison glands. Some species carry extra air below the pronotum so that they can stay submerged. Vacherie, Louisiana. #grasshoppers #algae #riparian #tetrigidae #insects #nature #louisiana #nature #macro

  19. And, in breaking news, here's the first migratory locust ever seen in Lincoln, NZ, seen today by William Harland at 2:30 pm.

This is a widespread cosmopolitan species considered native to NZ, and with the Māori name Kapakapa. In the right conditions elsewhere in the world it reaches pest-level densities.

  24. Nowadays I rarely hear the grasshoppers, as a child I heard them a lot, but now it is kind of extremely rare to hear them. I don't specifically know why, whether it's because there are too few suitable green areas in my area or something else entirely.

  25. Have you ever seen a pink grasshopper? A genetic mutation called erythrism (the overproduction of red pigment) leaves some individuals looking pretty in pink! Though these rare insects are beautiful, their vivid coloring makes hiding from predators much more difficult.
