Animal studies to interdyscyplinarna dziedzina nauki obejmująca humanistyczny namysł nad statusem i sytuacją osób zwierzęcych. Łączy zagadnienia z zakresu językoznawstwa, prawa, filozofii i socjologii. Na jej gruncie rozważana jest kwestia języka, jakim posługujemy się mówiąc o osobach zwierzęcych, ich status prawny oraz myślowe schematy, które przekładają się na stosunek ludzi do innych istot. Animal studies stanowi wartościowe narzędzie w codziennym działaniu zmierzającym do poprawy dobrostanu zwierząt.
To już trzecie spotkanie dyskusyjne, podczas którego skupimy się na kwestii języka, jakiego używamy, mówiąc o zwierzętach. Zastanowimy się nad jego rolą w kształtowaniu schematów myślowych oraz nad sposobem, w jaki wpływa nie tylko na nasze codzienne relacje ze zwierzętami, ale także na definiujące je prawo.

@perkinsy Thirty years ago my cat Straaltje discovered how to attract my attention in the kitchen when out of reach. She knew where to jump from the counter on a loose board so that I would feel it (I am #deaf). That board can also be considered a #tool. The international conference “Nature – Animals – War: Relations and Interactions from Antiquity to the Present Day” will take place at TU Dortmund University on 16–18 September 2026.

The conference aims to bring together researchers from all disciplines and career stages to explore how nature and animals have shaped — and been shaped by — war throughout history. The idea is to bridge environmental history, human-animal studies, and military history in new, interdisciplinary ways.

At the end of the day, it's not about our diet. It's about the fact that non-human animals are individuals, too, who want to live. The same things that give humans intrinsic dignity also apply to other animals with brains and nervous systems.

I would like to find some other way of referring to them besides "non-human" animals... humans are animals, too, so it's logical. But if we've seen other ideas, please let me know. I want to decentralize the human and not collectivize everyone else.

It's less about "veganism" and who is "vegan" and more about... are we recognizing animals' intrinsic dignity and will to live, and are we willing to take steps to put that into action.

Centering their lives, not our own comforts and desires. Because we're capable of the added reflection, we have this moral duty to use such knowledge and put it into practice. If we don't, we're wasting this faculty.
