  1. CW: Spider, being a spider

    Heyo friends, I met a #spider!

At one point I brought the camera too close and alarmed the poor thing, but it chilled out again after I backed off. Wild to me how spikey their legs are.

  6. #SpiderSunday: the crevices between the bricks under the railway bridge are well-populated with hacklemesh weavers (_Amaurobius ferox_) who can be coaxed out with an electric toothbrush. If you replace the toothbrush with your finger (#DontTryThisAtHome) they will sometimes, after some consideration, try biting the strange, un-bug-like thing. However they're not especially effective at it and it doesn't take much encouragement to get them to let go.

    - _Leucauge venusta_ spiderling has set up near the mosquito bucket
    - male _Attulus fasciger_
    - couldn't quite ID this smallish, cryptic-patterned jumper, any ideas? (🌎 Toronto, Ontario)
    - bonus mite: pollen-eating _Balaustium_ have started to appear!

  14. I know what you're thinking?
    Is it Spider Sunday already?

    #GoodMorning #Bonjour

I was holding off until your eyes opened, SPIDER!!

This is a female Golden Silk Orb-weaver (Trichonephila clavipes), also commonly known as a banana spider. Their venom has low toxicity and is considered harmless to humans

  24. Spotted yesterday: woodlouse spider (dysdera sp.) also known as baked bean spider, which I rather like.

I submitted to iRecord as d. crocata but this got an “awaiting review” response as the similarity to d. erythrina makes it difficult to identify except by expert under magnification. Also, neither recorded in my area (but close by).

They have formidable “fangs” which can be painful if they bite you, but not a big problem. It was on my glove 😬

  28. I think of this _Larinioides_ colouration as "white chocolate". The spiders in this genus I see in my area range from almost black to grey to orange-brown to peach to beige to, like this one, almost white.

  33. found another pair of mating leaf-curling sac spiders (family Clubionidae)!

The bubble-like thing in the first picture is the haematodocha, a sac in the male's palpal bulb that inflates to change the orientation/shape of the pedipalp to allow it to lock in to the female's convoluted genital opening.

  38. #SpiderSunday: A male _Habronattus decorus_ on the western shore of Tommy Thompson Park! I have only found these before on the City Hall green roof. The females have camouflaging brown patterns, but the males have a silvery-white cephalothorax and iridescent abdomen that shifts between orange-red and purple-red. And like all jumping spiders, their large front middle eyes give them a cute and charismatic aura.
