  18. The #idiom “to kill two #birds with one stone” means accomplishing two things with a single action or with a lesser effort than normally we need. This expression exists in other languages with a rich variety of different #animals: #rabbits and #hares, #flies, #pigeons, and #sparrows. They are either hunted or killed. In some languages, however, there is no explicit reference to any animal (green color).

  20. They're heeeeeeeeeeeere ...

Seriously, this is what I see out my front window every night in the winter. Except I was moving and using the blinky-light box when I took this, so they're looking around and trying to figure out how to react to me.

Normally they're all just sitting upright, and all looking directly at me. I'm not kidding.

  25. When meadow-nesting #birds, #partridges, or #hares disappear, the #fox becomes a convenient scapegoat. However, experts have long since established that the decisive factor is the destruction of their #habitats: intensively farmed land, #pesticides, early mowing, drainage systems, and monotonous crops.
Instead of controlling foxes, we should be planting hedges, restoring #wetlands, adjusting mowing schedules, and reducing pesticide use.

  30. We thought a creepy churchyard on a hill would be the ideal spot to try to see the blood moon #eclipse.
What could go wrong? Lots of trees in the way, that's what, so we continued to a field where only a bank of cloud stood between us and the lunar spectacle.
We did see some #hares and heard some owls though. And took some bad photos as the cloud cleared a bit.

  31. #Jackrabbit in my front yard today. This isn't the young one I saw yesterday; this is one of the adults that lives in the area.

Unlike true #rabbits, #hares (jackrabbits are hares, not rabbits... complain to someone) don't dig burrows. Instead, they just kind of scoop out a shallow depression in the dirt, and then lie in it. Hares aren't social animals, and live alone, so they don't really need a burrow. When they lie motionless in these bowls with their ears flat against their body and their legs pulled in underneath them, they look surprisingly close to rocks.

This one spent several hours in this spot this morning while it was windy and rainy. I opened the door slowly to get a picture, but after the first "click" sound, he or she took off.

    Captions:

    1) "I'm watching you closely. I don't trust you."
    2) "Nope, I'm outa here."
    3) "I must return to my home planet, my people need me."

  32. Dismal Manor gang is up and contemplating the glorious sunrise that might have been. Monday’s photos show what we got.

Rocky is air scenting to determine if it is worth the effort to leave the porch to check for hares and zombies.

I didn’t leave the porch. Smellings were not promising.

  33. Snowshoe #Hares can be common here, though I think we've been in a low point in their population cycle the last couple of years. Even when abundant they are elusive, so it's always a treat to see one + get pictures/video.
