CW: shiny copper coloured wasp on leaf
I was talking about #wasps (etc) with @enriquericos + @NatureMC here's a cool local one not huge but good size- maybe close to 1 inch/couple cm long? but very narrow. I *think* this is the same kind I saw earlier in the year laying eggs in cocoon of the Forest Tent Caterpillars (of which we had a major explosion this year- did I ever share videos?) if so, this should have been a great year for them! #insects #Alberta #BorealForest #inverts #nature #photography

... which I saw while chasing a velvet ant male around a fig tree bark, as it was walking slowly.
The velvet ant, a male, is perhaps Ronisia brutia, but I am not sure:

CW: trypophobia? potter wasp nest
@enriquericos that's a cool one :)
This sp is one we have here Euodynerus leucomelas Black and White Mason Wasp, but often called Potter Wasps- but I wouldn't be surprised if we have more than one sp. Some I guess make their clay nests inside cavities etc so that would be one reason I don't see them.
Here's an example of what they look like, though not saying it's that sp! Bonus shots of some of the many many fancy wasps- even smaller.

CW: trypophobia? potter wasp nest
@cohanf As a child I was stung quite often, until I learned how to act around them.
Having a nest that size would make me uneasy, but it's a free sculpture... so... I don't know what I would do.
I do have some pretty big potter wasps flying around, building their mud nests in what's supposed to be my studio XD I think they're harmless, we don't mess with each other. Here's a pic I took:

I think my home has become #hummingbird central. I have five 8-oz hummingbird feeders and I keep them full all the time in the summer. I'm currently going through 2 quarts of sugar water a week. Birds are buzzing around from first light until last night.
Sadly, I'm also #yellowjacket and #hornet central. I just set up another three wasp traps and all three of them were catching #wasps within 20 minutes. I also just sprayed a few hornet nests. So I'll stay inside for a while.😬

The Yearly Wasp Sting
Reading Time: 2 minutesThere is a high probability that we well get stung at least once per year. When I am cycling I often notice bees, bumblebees and wasps bounce off of me. Sometimes I feel something hit me but luckily I’m fine. Yesterday I wasn’t that lucky.
Yesterday I hit a wasp, bee or something else and it stung me. I went to my lip to pull the stinging insect away and threw it away. I continued to cycle for a bit, and then I stopped in the shade to send a message that I had been stung.
I then continued cycling and I considered turning straight back, but I continued for a bit. In the end I cycled towards Versoix stadium and up towards France, before turning and heading to Chavannes centre with one clear goal, to stop by a pharmacy and get something for the swelling.
Is it affecting your breathing, are you having trouble swallowing. “nope” to both questions. I was given three pills, including antihistamines, and then I cycled home.
This sting was especially bad. It’s not just that my lip swelled, but that my cheeks and jaw did as well. I really got myself to look like a caricature.
Last time I was stung I didn’t go to a pharmacy, in part because it was still the pandemic. This time I had no reservations so I went. The second reason for going is that when you’re stung, it lasts for a few days and it hurts. By going to the pharmacy I dealt with the worst of it, and now I simply need to recover.
This morning I went for a bike ride for a simple reason, first, because I felt that running would make things worse, and second to ensure I don’t develop a phobia of cycling and being stung. I think I was lucky not to be stung multiple times with all the riding I do.
What’s funny is that I really expected that today was the day I would be stung. At breakfast wasps were attracted to us, and then the same afternoon I got stung.
I don’t know whether it was a wasp or hornet but my reaction was magnitudes worse than usual, so it could have been a hornet.
I slept fine, and when the swelling went down I could eat normally, so that is a relief. I hope to be healed within the next day or two.

A visitor to the bird bath having a drink. It is, or so I thought, a Median Wasp (Collins Complete British Insects) but images online do not always match exactly. Are their markings quite variable?
Perhaps @nev or someone else can help.
