A comparison between primary (unlogged) and managed forest plots in Sweden found that the primary forests stored 72% more carbon than the managed forests. Most of the differential is soil carbon. This is 2.7 to 8 times larger than previously thought.

2- this view shows how tricky it is to see the plants at this time of year-- each arrow shows a plant, and no guarantee I got all of them!

Another of the first few wildflowers: Viola adunca Early Blue Violet.
It's very common here, quite adaptable but generally in woodland edge/clearings, but I had to hunt around in a number of prominent colonies to find some plants flowering- on the sunny south edge of mixed woods, in quite a sheltered area. They will open many many more flowers over weeks and the plants will get quite a bit larger

2 At first, just hearing them, I thought it was woodpeckers, but they were sounding not quite right + they were staying high up in the trees (Pileated Woodpeckers spend a lot of time on the lower parts of trees) + I caught a glimpse of undersides as they flew + was seeing some reddish brown, not right for Pileated Woodpeckers. This view of the area where I saw them shows you how easy it is to *not* see birds you know very well are there..lol

Wishing all a happy and blessed season ahead (yesterday was Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, Autumn in the South). We had some springy weather earlier in the week (to at least 59C/60F) but the day itself rolled in just a few degrees above freezing (just a little below average) with some pretty fog. Rain and snow overnight and that looks about the same for the week ahead #spring #winter #sprinter #Alberta #Canada #nature #GetOutside #BorealForest

This is a really beautiful video production, as well as being very interesting in its subject: Long term satellite records confirm the #borealForest has moved north by 23 km since 1985. It's a net gain of trees, which could be helpful for #carbon sequestration #biodiversity #climateChange https://nasa-ext.app.box.com/s/zp3qyzdgsi0xfqrcnctph5117f0s3sy1

My immediate area is Mixed Wood Boreal Forest, transitioning to Aspen Parkland to the east +Foothills biome to the west. We have mainly Aspen + Balsam Poplar, White + Black Spruce, Tamarack Birch + Willow with very scattered Pine. I start to see Pine on the drive west to work in #RockyMountainHouse,
Most of them are in spots that for some reason I struggle to get decent photos of..lol Here some are highlighted in the centre of the photo

We've fed Chickadees on some cold days + they've become very bold: approaching us very keenly to beg for more food. This little bunch actually mobbed me when I was out in the bush to get firewood a few days ago-swooping close enough to almost land on me #birds #nature #Alberta #Canada 🌿📷 #BorealForest #GetOutside #ForestSpirits #BirdGoddess

We've got a handful of Woodpecker species here, at least 3 are year round. This is the Hairy Woodpecker Leuconotopicus villosus distinguished from the similar but smaller Downy Woodpecker by size (not always super evident), the longer bill you can see in the side view and the unmarked white outer feathers on the tail. I'm often waiting to see photos enlarged on the screen for id! This one was high in a Balsam Poplar tree.

A new study using the longest high-resolution satellite record of tree cover has found that the boreal forest has expanded by 12% and shifted northward over the past four decades....The results show an expansion of approximately 0.84 million square kilometres, with growth concentrated between 64°N and 68°N. - Feng et al (2026)

We've had a long spell of well above average temperatures, and no new snow in weeks. All about to change with a brief (?) deep freeze and snow this week...starting tomorrow?
For me it's *always* about the light (and line, and texture!) but that may be even more true in winter when the colours are fewer and the lower sun gives dramatic light much of the day.

In yesterday's photo post, I mentioned I started work on a hard to cut fallen tree. I shot some video also- some full format stuff that is not yet edited, and a short showing the tree, site and the grouse nearby. This photo is from the wide format, of course, the #video linked is the short- YouTube with Spectra to follow

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 14 I dug back into the files again for these images- this time to late September- yet these berries seem tailor made for the winter festive season! #ArtAdventCalendar Day 11 Frosted dead spruce branches at the edge of woods, and deep winter shadows.. Not exactly warm, but yesterday was a bit milder, so I spent more time outside- got some wood cut and took a few photos and a bit of video- of course I missed the early sun...lol Today much colder and fresh snow- still hoping to get a quick bit of wood harvesting in but I won't hang around outside too long. #pagan #photography #BorealForest #Alberta #winter #frostodon

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 06 Yesterday afternoon was overcast, a bit of snow, bit of ice fog had left the trees slightly frosted (hoping for some nice white views today!). Late afternoon light made the photos look rather abstract, so I took that as permission to play around with them a bit more (see alt). #Alberta #BorealForest #garden #trees #frostodon #nature #winter #snow #photography

A small rediscovery from my archive.
In June 2023, during Alberta’s extreme wildfire season, I created a day-by-day animation using NASA FIRMS fire-hotspot data. The animation shows how quickly ignition points spread across the province — almost like watching the forest "breathe fire" in slow motion.
It didn’t get much attention on LinkedIn… but this feels like the right place to share it again. If you’re into remote sensing, wildfire monitoring, or environmental analytics — this one might be interesting.

Exploring large-scale landscape structures with a simple Principal Component Analysis (PCA) applied to a MODIS composite.
The PCA reveals striking contrasts in surface materials, vegetation patterns, and terrain transitions across western Canada — from the Rocky Mountains into the prairies and the Canadian Shield.
Even with moderate-resolution MODIS data, spectral variability produces a surprisingly rich view of regional geography and geomorphology.#RemoteSensing #EarthObservation #Geology #PCA #MODIS #OpenData #GIS #QGIS #Geomorphology #Geoscience #RStats #Lithology #GeoDataArt #GeoSpectralArt #BorealForest #Taiga #Canada #Alberta

Short video. I've been trying to take advantage of warm dry #autumn weather to get ready for winter. While doing prep work in my woodcutting area, a Mourning Cloak #Butterfly joined me for a bit. It will be finding a place to snuggle for winter, then be one of the earliest butterflies on the wing in spring! also #FallColour has been building- probably near peak now and a great #lichen patch #Alberta #nature #BorealForest #GetOutside

The northern #BorealForest is burning after yet another summer of #drought. The #NWT in the #subArctic has had two community evacuation orders in as many days. Fort Providence on the shores of the mighty Mackenzie River in recent years sheltered so many #climaterefugees especially from #Yellowknife now are climate refugees themselves. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/fort-prov-evac-1.7622251
