CW: shiny copper coloured wasp on leaf
I was talking about #wasps (etc) with @enriquericos + @NatureMC here's a cool local one not huge but good size- maybe close to 1 inch/couple cm long? but very narrow. I *think* this is the same kind I saw earlier in the year laying eggs in cocoon of the Forest Tent Caterpillars (of which we had a major explosion this year- did I ever share videos?) if so, this should have been a great year for them! #insects #Alberta #BorealForest #inverts #nature #photography

CW: colourful bee mimic fly
This handsome person was on a willow support in a pea garden bed. At first I thought it was a much more common Tachinid fly, but this is new to me: Mesembrina decipiens (I think, I'll see if I get any input on iNat), which is in the housefly family -though not a housefly, and clearly a bee mimic. I'm not sure what the adult feeds on (just saw the one, and it wasn't feeding) but it seems larvae likely develop in dung.

Up until approximately a decade ago, most boreal forest lightening strikes fell on damp ground, usually from recent snow melt. Climate change has turned the upper half of North America into a giant tinder box.

Finally got through the 2nd day of the week for iNaturalist observations. I still have over 3,000 photos to process.

2 Same plant I forgot to name : Clematis occidentalis Western (Blue) Clematis wild in the woods on the farm. In one shot you can see my tripod and a little bag I carry a lens in.

1 This plant is only 20-30m from the edge of my acreage (on my cousin's farm) I only noticed it for the first time last year- my first time seeing the species nearby. I'd thought flowering was later and hadn't checked it, but decided to look on my last day to take pics for the #AlbertaMayPlantCount To my disappointment the flowers were past peak but on the + side a lot more flowers than last year :)

Crazy beautiful! Not that many Drone /Flower flies yet, and not all of those willing to pose, so I was happy to find this person comfortably settled on a baby Aspen leaf (not a super warm day, so maybe basking?). Nature is amazing :)

A comparison between primary (unlogged) and managed forest plots in Sweden found that the primary forests stored 72% more carbon than the managed forests. Most of the differential is soil carbon. This is 2.7 to 8 times larger than previously thought.

Another of the first few wildflowers: Viola adunca Early Blue Violet.
It's very common here, quite adaptable but generally in woodland edge/clearings, but I had to hunt around in a number of prominent colonies to find some plants flowering- on the sunny south edge of mixed woods, in quite a sheltered area. They will open many many more flowers over weeks and the plants will get quite a bit larger

2 At first, just hearing them, I thought it was woodpeckers, but they were sounding not quite right + they were staying high up in the trees (Pileated Woodpeckers spend a lot of time on the lower parts of trees) + I caught a glimpse of undersides as they flew + was seeing some reddish brown, not right for Pileated Woodpeckers. This view of the area where I saw them shows you how easy it is to *not* see birds you know very well are there..lol

Wishing all a happy and blessed season ahead (yesterday was Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, Autumn in the South). We had some springy weather earlier in the week (to at least 59C/60F) but the day itself rolled in just a few degrees above freezing (just a little below average) with some pretty fog.
