    As we spelunk, we might recall that it was on this date in 1962 that the U.S. military detonated Little Feller I, a tactical nuclear weapon at the Nevada Test Site as part of Operation Sunbeam. It was the last near-ground atmospheric nuclear detonation conducted by the United States. The high-altitude Fishbowl tests concluded in November of1962 with a detonation at around 69,000 feet altitude. Thereafter, in accordance with the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty, tests were conducted underground… more holes.

    A short story in honor of those who cannot help digging.

    I can see by the look on your face that you’re confused. Look down.

    Hi! Yes, I’m the head that is protruding from a hole in the ground. As you can see by my waiving, I also have arms. I also have a body and legs, but a lot of it is not visible to you because, well, I’m in a hole.

    Oh, don’t worry about me. In fact, this hole is exactly where I wanted to be. I ended up here while engaging in an argument with a friend. I was trying to score some points, but lo and behold, the ground started to cave, and slowly, but surely I ended up in this hole.

    You know what? I feel rather comfortable in my hole. In fact, I’d like to enlarge it so that I can sink even deeper into it. Do you happen to have a shovel I could use for this task?

    Oh, wow, what a stroke of luck! Thank you for the shovel. Now, if you don’t mind, I need to get on digging. Have a nice day!

    I regularly run into people who like to dig themselves into a hole.

    The latest one was someone who approached me for dating. I sensed drama in their profile. I said, “no, thanks,” and they immediately proceeded to prove me right by tossing drama at my head with their response.

With this technique it's possible to resolve simultaneously 14 different parameters of #electrons and #holes in #semiconductors!

  4. Gravitational waves produce a background hum across the whole universe |

    The fabric of the universe is constantly rippling, according to astronomers who have discovered a background buzz of #gravitational #waves. These waves may be produced by #supermassive #black #holes merging across the universe, but they might also have more exotic origins, such as leftover ripples in space-time created shortly after the #big #bang.

    Pinning down their true nature could tell us about how supermassive black holes grow and affect their host galaxies, or even about how the universe evolved in its first moments.

    To find this mysterious hum, astronomers have been tracking rapidly rotating neutron stars called #pulsars that blast out light with extreme regularity. By looking at different pulsars across the Milky Way, astronomers can effectively use them as a galaxy-sized gravitational-wave #detector called a pulsar #timing #array.

    While individual gravitational waves, which are ripples in space-time created by massive objects colliding, have been seen regularly since the first detection in 2015, the object of this search is different. Those previous gravitational waves all have a #localised origin and rise and fall hundreds of times a second, but the newly-discovered signal is more like a gravitational wave #background that would permeate the entire universe at much #lower #frequencies, similar in concept to the cosmic microwave background, which is radiation left over by the big bang and seen all over the universe today.
