I think my home has become #hummingbird central. I have five 8-oz hummingbird feeders and I keep them full all the time in the summer. I'm currently going through 2 quarts of sugar water a week. Birds are buzzing around from first light until last night.
Sadly, I'm also #yellowjacket and #hornet central. I just set up another three wasp traps and all three of them were catching #wasps within 20 minutes. I also just sprayed a few hornet nests. So I'll stay inside for a while.😬

OK, for those of you interested in a homemade #yellowjacket #trap that seems to work outrageously well, it's pretty easy. Mix some apple cider vinegar, water, and sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Add a few drops of dish soap. Cut two holes about the size of a finger joint about halfway up a plastic soda or water bottle. Put a spoonful of wet cat food or dog food into the bottle. Add the liquid mix. Put the cap on. Put the bottle where there are yellow jackets. (1/3)

#BaldFacedHornet isn't a true hornet. It's in the yellowjacket wasp family.

CW: Close-up photos of a yellow jacket
This appears to be a queen V. squamosa. I have no idea how she got on my windshield wiper, what she’s doing there now, or why she didn’t leave sometime during my five mile drive across town with a stop to get gas along the way. She just sat there wiggling about the whole time. #Insect #Entomology #YellowJacket

I’m not a sportsball person. But I am a #georgiatech #yellowjacket. Any day where GT football wins is a good day.
Any day where GT wins and U(sic)GA looses, is a great day.
Today was a good day, and it was *almost* a great day.
Good job today, #Jackets. Better luck next time, #UGA.

Yellowjackets eating a spotted lantern fly. It was dead before they got to it. Filmed 9/5/2025 Bethel Connecticut - yes, you may absolutely download & repost this elsewhere!

Seem to have trained yellowjackets that spotted lantern flies are food!
neighbor K & I have been smashing lantern flies on the tree of heaven at next door gas station whenever we're on break. which has attracted yellow jackets to scavenge the corpses. It took them a few days to recognize them as edible, but now there's loads of them scavenging in area.
This morning saw one going after a live one! Did a bunch of exploratory bites but gave up in favor of joining other yellowjackets in pulling apart dead ones.
No issues with the yellowjackets bothering me or K while we're hunting lantern flies. They're just waiting for us to drop 'em and then swoop in. So just like other scavengers, just on a vastly different size scale than say ravens and wolves. We're kaiju sized to the yellowjackets.

Small pleasures
Inspired by the vlog I shared earlier, posted by @ewen I went into the parched garden and took a photo of something that I have enjoyed watching lately. I provide water for birds and insects, butterflies and bees and foxes (and raccoons and coyotes and deer) so it's a joy to watch the obvious appreciation, even on the smallest scale.

When picnicking or having a snack while hiking, here's a handy tip for keeping wasps at bay! (Observe what she is drawn to, then make a #wasp 'offering'!!!)
The simple trick that stops hungry #wasps from ruining your picnic
by Seirian Sumner, August 8, 2025
"Long summer days call for picnics – but wasps often make an uninvited appearance. One quick trick can stop them from ruining an al fresco get-together.
"It's summer in the northern hemisphere and that means Sun, sea – and wasps.
A lot of us have been taught to fear wasps as aggressive insects that exist only to make our lives a misery. But with unsustainable wildlife loss across the planet, we need to learn to live alongside all organisms – even wasps. They are important #pollinators and predators of insects."A little knowledge about their natural history can help you dine safely alongside wasps.
"The wasps that usually visit your picnic are typically the common #yellowjacket (Vespula vulgaris) and the #GermanWasp (Vespula germanica). They seem to appear from nowhere. What should you do?"

Since the bald-faced hornets were getting a bad rap due to an encounter with a popular Mastodon person yesterday I thought I'd share my encounter with this one this morning before picking berries.
I slung my picking basket over a ring fixture on a post and noticed the wasp gathering wood pulp between the straps and not even flinching. I guess I'm in their good guy database. ;)

I love paper wasps.
I don’t hate yellow jackets. But they’re really terrifying near their nest!
Once, I foolishly went to see the *known* yellow jacket nest on the trail in Cape Cod. I got too close, and had to run really fast to escape their attack. Luckily, I only got bitten once, but it stung! I found a decapitated head of a yellow jacket in my t-shirt. 😳 I still have this head in my dead insect collection. 😙

As a #YellowJacket, I am really embarrassed about this.I thought we were smarter than that.
