  1. Spotted a Six-spotted Tiger Beetle (Cicindela sexguttata) eating an ant in my garden. These metallic green beetles are efficient predators—larvae wait in burrows to ambush prey, while adults chase down insects on the move. Harmless to humans, and great for natural pest control.

  6. Beaked Twig Gall Wasps (Burnettweldia plumbella) form galls on several California oaks—including blue, leather, Muller’s, and scrub oaks. Adult wasps are tiny, just 3 to 4 mm long!

  7. Since the bald-faced hornets were getting a bad rap due to an encounter with a popular Mastodon person yesterday I thought I'd share my encounter with this one this morning before picking berries.

I slung my picking basket over a ring fixture on a post and noticed the wasp gathering wood pulp between the straps and not even flinching. I guess I'm in their good guy database. ;)

  12. This empress is also known as the Giant Valanga, or Hedge Grasshopper.

Unlike her swarming cousins, the locust, she chooses a solitary existence only gathering when conditions prove most favourable.

She can produce an egg pod containing up to 150 eggs!

  13. This large milkweed bug sitting on a milkweed pod is a true bug. Because it's native, the plant tolerates its predation. You can tell it's the "large" version of the bug because of the band across its middle.

  14. Papilio multicaudata, two-tailed swallowtail butterfly. I haven't seen an Oregon swallowtail for sure this year and this one looked different.

  15. Syrphus ribesii hoverfly decided to land on my finger when I was going to try to take a picture of bees on the clove currant.

I one handed took photos and focus on the hoverfly with the phone, which somehow made the phone start taking photos as fast as it could, which I got stopped after about 120 photos, and I of course kept the camera aimed towards the currant bush while not disturbing the hoverfly because that was important apparently.

  16. I identified the super fast bee and got more photos because the clove currants kept it busy longer. It's a Habropoda cineraria which is a type of digger bee. Other sitings on bugguide.net are from the region.

  18. Found a large & healthy #colony of #ThatchingAnts - they're one of my fave #NativeInsects on #VancouverIsland ❤🐜❤
These are very #beneficial #ants in natural #ecosystems - they eat other insects & also aid with forest debris cleanup.
I really enjoy watching them at work & will do a video of that at different site w/larger #AntHill
