This steam locomotive sits in an Oroville park now. This locomotive was built at American Locomotive Co. in Schenectady, NY in 1919. The original owner was United Verde Copper Co who owned the United Verde mine near Jerome AZ, one of the largest copper mines in the US. In 1927, it was sold to Western Pacific Railroad, who operated the Feather River Route that runs past Oroville. #photography #history #railroad #locomotive #train #Oroville #California

Semi-retired me got tagged to work on a couple projects, one in Oroville and the other in San Diego. Travel good, expenses paid. I'm in report writing phase, bored and needed a break. So, I diddled with some photos from Oroville. This is Capone, the "junkyard" dog. He's a sweet old guy but they tell me he has no mercy on the local rabbits. Dogs will be dogs. #dogs #dog #dogsofmastodon #pets #photography #Oroville

Oroville Carnegie Library, or as it is now the Butte County Public Law Library. I'm always on the lookout for Carnegie libraries on my travels. We could sure use more Andrew Carnegies today. Talking to you, all you billionaires. #Oroville #ButteCounty #California #architecture #history #Carnegie #ClassicalRevival #library #NationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces

Oroville State Theatre, opened in 1928. Lovingly restored. It's on the National Register of Historic Places. I wished I could have seen the inside. I kept finding more interesting things as I was walking and driving around the area. #history #architecture #SpanishColonialRevival #NationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces #NRHP #theatre #theater #neon #Oroville #ButteCounty #California #GoldCountry

The indigenous California peoples harvested acorns and ground the meal on stone mortars using stone pestles. One of the saddest stories is Ishi, the the last known member of the Native American Yahi people. In 1911, aged 50, he emerged at a barn and corral, 2 mi from downtown Oroville. The rest of the Yahi were killed in the California genocide in the 19th century. #NativeAmerican #indigenouspeople #indigenous #Oroville #California #acorn #ButteCounty #history

The Oroville Dam and Lake Oroville. This is a big ass dam, the tallest dam in the US, completed in 1968. A big story, in February 2017, the main and emergency spillways threatened to fail, leading to the evacuation of 188,000 people living near the dam. The Lake Oroville Visitors Center has a great exhibit about the emergency. California has an incredible water infrastructure on an unbelievable scale. #OrovilleDam #Oroville #LakeOroville #California #dam #water

The Mother Orange Tree is the oldest living orange tree in Northern California. Planted in 1856, and transplanted twice from its original location. My Dad moved from Michigan to California in 1954. He loved the fact that he could grow citrus fruit in our backyard. So, we always had orange and lemon trees in our backyard and fresh citrus fruit right from the tree. #citrus #MotherOrangeTree #GoldCountry #Oroville #California #ButteCounty #history #landmark

Firefighters staying at the hotel where I stayed in Oroville on 8/15/24. They were fighting the Park Fire, an arson caused fire that started on 7/24/24 and to date has burned 429,603 acres, the fourth largest in recorded California history. The trucks are from San Bernardino County Fire Department. #ParkFire #wildfire #handcrew #firefighters #SanBernadino #Oroville #ButteCounty #firetrucks #California

The Jewish Cemetery in Oroville. I stopped to take a few photos in the not ideal harsh afternoon sunlight. With my limited time (work trip), I tried to find as many interesting things (to me) as I could in Oroville. And surprisingly, there were many. #photography #cemetery #Jewish #Oroville #California #SacramentoValley #ButteCounty #GoldCountry #history #GoldRush

I've gotten over the weird feeling of dining alone after so many solo work trips. Having a phone to scroll through social and news helps, because everyone stares at their phone these days. I used to bring a book or a newspaper. But newspapers are dying, sadly. Great if the server is nice and has a sense of humor. Found a great place in Oroville, the Union Patio Bar & Grill. Mahi mahi tacos. #food #tacos #Oroville #California

The Historic Oroville Inn, now used as a student dormitory. I suspect the students are with the Northwest Lineman College in Oroville. I was driving around and happened to come across their training area. The Oroville Inn opened in 1930 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. #photography #Oroville #SacramentoValley #architecture #NRHP #NationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces #history #California #lineman

Driving from Sacramento to Oroville one passes miles and miles, acres and acres of orchards and rice fields, cattle on hillsides. Cherries, peaches, apricots, nectarines, olives. And water is the limiting factor, the critical path to this abundance. #photography #blackandwhite #Oroville #SacramentoValley #California #agriculture #power #energy #powerlines
