  1. fell in love with the #AutonomousKitchenCounsils framework as a decolonial way of care and revolution. weaving sacred webs of abundance based on our relationships that already exist. this is what we need.

  2. I just realized there should exist a cannon of dystopias that #solarpunk s point to as a warning on what is going to happen if we don't actually #decolonize our supply chains when building solarpunk or keep the capitalist ownership structure when building our green future.

To me, the prime example of this is the movie #elysium. A paradise space station in the clouds full of greenery and high tech and loads of lowlifes on the earth, rotting on the wasteland.

I was recently shocked that people clapped for a skyscraper with a roof garden with fruits that was showed on Andrew Millison channel. People called it solarpunk! A tiny bunch of locals in the comments pointed out that the workers that keep those gardens up don't enjoy their fruits. They are low pay. The relatively tiny output (1t annually) of that garden goes to a luxury restaurant there and it's reserved only for the VIP to brag it's extra fresh.

We should be banging those people with the whole range of dystopian dynamics that it reproduces!

What other dystopian classics do you recommend to warn people against solarpunk fail?

  6. Today is day 10 of the LGBTQ alphabet series: Wrapping up with a number and a letter to represent indigenous people.

    2S is for Two-Spirit.

While the term Two-Spirit or 2S is relatively new, Two-Spirit people have always been part of North American Indigenous culture. They are part of the Queer community and deserve acceptance and respect everywhere.

The general understanding is that "Two-Spirit" as a pan-tribal umbrella term came into being at an inter-tribal gathering in Winnipeg in 1990. The term is meant to honor diverse traditional gender roles within Indigenous cultures before European contact.

For Indigenous people and allies, de-colonization is more than history. It is seeing past Western concepts of the male/female binary and embracing one's true self as understood by one's heritage.

As a late blooming white Bi male my knowledge of "Two-Spirit" is minimal, so I used Gemini AI to research and verify accuracy and respect. If you’re interested in learning more, refer to the resources linked in the main Substack article.

    Regards ~ Jim

  10. "I bought a NEW electric car and installed new solar panels on my roof with great big Tesla batteries and good lord I'll save some money in seven years if we don't talk about the car payment and installing the EV charger in my garage and the software I now pay for for the life of the gar (which won't be more than ten years anyway). But you know what, the break-even for the planet was on DAY ONE so whoduhthunkit I'm giving myself a good ol' pat on the back"

I see this, the stupidest of all takes, at least ten times a day here on ol' Mastodon.

I get real tired of saying this but let me try one more time, a little louder: THINGS REQUIRE THINGS TO BE MANUFACTURED. Buying new stuff is *not* *ever* an ecological good. EVER. Yes, I said ever. No, not even your solar panels.

    Use. Less. Shit.
    Stop. Caring. About. Status.
    Break. The. Machine.

And save the pat on the back. You've yet to do anything difficult, or which puts you in a position to have to stand against the grain.

    Do better.

  12. 🇺🇸 usa-iof coalition is the most horrific human rights abuser GLOBALLY.

When the usa makes committee, a "fund," and has human rights studied....
They leave out isntreal and the usa governments & militaries.
After inspecting themselves for the most killing, maiming, starving, destructive, raping, bombing, and theft... usa & iof are #1 !!
    #EndUSAterror
    #EndIOFterror
    #NoOccupation
#Decolonize by booting the usa military. They will NEVER be "peacekeepers" or "safety" except for themselves.

  13. I'll also crosspost this with the updated figures from today's harvest for those of you interested. Since January first, we've produced on-site:

    111 dozen eggs (that's 1,336 eggs approximately)
    175.25 pounds of meat
    21 pounds of vegetables
    16.5 pounds of lard
    7 pounds of animal fodder

This does not count the 100 or so pounds of unrendered fat in our freezer, nor does it count almost all of our spring crops that have yet to come to harvest (only the early season ones that we already harvested). We've given lots away, and we have lots in our freezer and canned for later.

Our inputs are minimal: once a year we make a bulk organic animal feed order, we use some well water, and I did order seeds last year (though often I save them from our own vegetables). No fertilizers, no mineral inputs, no purchased soil, no pots, no trays, no tilling, nothing. We've transformed about a half acre or so (and growing) of our six acres of previously landfilled, compacted, and completely soil-collapsed land into cultivable soil. It's taking time, but the momentum is building and it's getting easier every season to rebuild topsoil and produce more on-site with less inputs.

  15. This month's newsletter release for paid subscribers is a compilation of the six biggest things we think you need to consider before going off on your homesteading, permacultur-ing, or back-to-the-land-ing dream.

While this might sound corny, we see you. We know that lots of you are disillusioned with the polycrisis and the economic and social institutions we live under and you wish for either sovereignty or an exit from capitalism or just to get out of your day job (or all three). Alternatively, we see those of you who are just trying to figure out how to reduce your own impact while seeking to solve some of the more structural issues, because let's face it: there is a possibility that all we can do is what *we* can do, because we know that the powers-that-be really might not care that we need change.

So we sat down and thought about what mistakes we made, and what mistakes others make, and what it is that people are ultimately looking to do when they try to get into a life like this. The result is useful, we think, and we hope that if you can spare $5 you'll look into it. Any contributions help us with our own sovereignty project, and help us feed others, and help us rewild this section of the Mojave and (we hope) a big enough section to make meaningful microclimate impacts one day.

If you read it, or contribute in any way, or share it, thank you very much. We appreciate you, and you're helping to keep us going.
