  2. P.S. In contrast to The Trustees of Reservations, this is what it looks like when an organization that actually knows how to manage and treat its membership tells you that your membership is about to renew. #TheTrustees #TrusteesOfReservations #MassAudubon #charities #nonprofits

  3. I appreciate that The Trustees of Reservations exists, and I appreciate the work they do to safeguard nature and historic sites throughout Massachusetts.

But I’m just so tired of how badly run their membership program is, of how poorly they treat members, and of the half-assed job they do on some basic maintenance tasks. So much so, in fact, that I’m probably going to cancel my membership the next time it comes up for renewal.

  4. I support I should feel sorry, but as someone who has repeatedly warned #nonprofits (& media outlets) that I've worked about their over-rerliance on #bigtech platforms, I find it hard to really be so sympathetic.

Also - how can it be that I, an individual, have a most robust data backup and self-hosting system than so many entire non-profit organizations?

  5. Mission Local: Can this treasured S.F. photography institution cheat death again?. “Hal Fischer says he’s twice rescued SF Camerawork, the nonprofit gallery that has supported the work of experimental photographers for over 50 years, and he’s ready to do it again.”

  6. 7. @smallfind Are you looking for things that sell well and/or have high margins? How does the connection to the content and mission of the organization factor into this (if at all)?

For the last question (and for this that may not know), most orgs have at rules that have nominal requirements, but enforcement may... flex, let's say... in response to the profit, traffic, and other sales goals - at least in my experience.

  8. Future of Good: New database maps Canada’s $17.3 billion DAF landscape and where philanthropic wealth is concentrated. “A new database that maps Canada’s donor-advised funds (DAFs) landscape, shows that a significant share of the country’s charitable assets are concentrated in a small number of organizations. The new database from WellFunded, is intended to make information about […]

  10. @ai6yr

Something is still fishy with that. Say vacation payout is 1 month each year. So that would be about 3 years of payout, but it's unlikely that they were making $400k that entire time which means that they got paid likely 2-3x the value of the originally accrued vacation time.

It's one thing to let an employee carry over a month of two salary a get paid at their new pay rare, but to allow them to get 3 years? That's financial mismanagement and they should be removed from their CEO jobs for allowing that (I guess this is more the CFOs job to prevent that from happening, but still).

  11. "...(CEO) was earning a little over $400,000 a year before that number shot up in 2023. She said her base salary over the last several years has remained around $405,000.....The 50-year-old Family Crisis Center brings in about $15 million in revenue — nearly all of it taxpayer money from government grants — to run crisis hotlines, domestic shelters and programs to help those struggling with homelessness....."

  12. Hey, fedi. What smaller non-profits do you recommend for donations?

Some beautiful people have been tipping me for my articles and my accessibility app. That gives me the warm fuzzies.

But I’m going to donate those tips, because other folks need them more. And I’m going to replace my tips links with non-profit donation links.

    My current list:

    1. Sogorea Te’ Land Trust
    2. Audre Lorde Project
    3. Equal Justice Initiative
    4. STEM Like a Girl

    Who are your faves?

  13. NiemanLab: Despite concerns about AI Overviews, some nonprofit news outlets see a surge in search traffic. “In Nieman Lab’s quarterly ranking of nonprofit news outlets, four news outlets saw a bump in traffic thanks in part to their coverage of primary elections in May and June. 14. Supporting #Inclusion & Independence at INspire #Café ☕️

Returned to INspire Café in Wakefield today for the best Iced Cold Brew, and to drop off an in-person donation for their current fundraiser! ✨

Right now, they have an incredible $100K Matching Challenge going on thanks to Omar’s World of Comics — meaning every dollar donated gets matched dollar-for-dollar to double the impact! 👥

It was so awesome seeing two rockstars, Whitman and Dan, on shift! They took my all-abilities #fitness class a few weeks back, so seeing them at work was a huge highlight. Bonus: I also got to chat with Tom, Tara, Nancy, and even Dan’s and Whitman’s parents! It’s more than a café — it’s community.❤️

➡️ #Nonprofits like INspire Café rely on partners, local support, and donations to create these meaningful opportunities.

If you can’t make it in person to grab a coffee or meal, you can still support their mission online 👉🏽 inspirecafe.org

Every like, and share helps spread the word!
