This goes for any researchers and evaluators, even if IRB doesn't apply or if you have an exemption. I would think this would be obvious, but it's disappointing to learn everyday what isn't obvious to so many people.

Microsoft used to grant special licenses to smaller nonprofits so they could get Office apps like Word, Excel and OneDrive at no charge. Last year they announced they were winding down the program. I appreciate that The Trustees of Reservations exists, and I appreciate the work they do to safeguard nature and historic sites throughout Massachusetts.
But I’m just so tired of how badly run their membership program is, of how poorly they treat members, and of the half-assed job they do on some basic maintenance tasks. So much so, in fact, that I’m probably going to cancel my membership the next time it comes up for renewal.

I support I should feel sorry, but as someone who has repeatedly warned #nonprofits (& media outlets) that I've worked about their over-rerliance on #bigtech platforms, I find it hard to really be so sympathetic.
Also - how can it be that I, an individual, have a most robust data backup and self-hosting system than so many entire non-profit organizations?

@smallfind Are you looking for things that sell well and/or have high margins? How does the connection to the content and mission of the organization factor into this (if at all)?
For the last question (and for this that may not know), most orgs have at rules that have nominal requirements, but enforcement may... flex, let's say... in response to the profit, traffic, and other sales goals - at least in my experience.

Something is still fishy with that. Say vacation payout is 1 month each year. So that would be about 3 years of payout, but it's unlikely that they were making $400k that entire time which means that they got paid likely 2-3x the value of the originally accrued vacation time.
It's one thing to let an employee carry over a month of two salary a get paid at their new pay rare, but to allow them to get 3 years? That's financial mismanagement and they should be removed from their CEO jobs for allowing that (I guess this is more the CFOs job to prevent that from happening, but still).

"Two FBI agents, one from New York’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, told a former member of Extinction Rebellion NYC they wanted to ask him about the group at his home upstate on Friday, an attorney for the group told The Intercept. The visit followed a prior attempt to reach him at his old address.
"The FBI’s apparent probe of Extinction Rebellion NYC comes as the Justice Department ramps up its surveillance of activists protesting immigration enforcement and the Trump administration creates secret lists of domestic enemies under Trump’s National Security Presidential #Memorandum7, or #NSPM7." 'I believe this to be a significant escalation of the criminal legal system against #XR and find it very troubling,' said Ron Kuby, the Extinction Rebellion attorney. 'This is usually the way we find out an actual investigation is underway and is often followed by other visits and other actions.'
"The former Extinction Rebellion member, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear for his safety, said that the visit came after a phone call in January from a special agent that he assumed was a scam.
" 'I was skeptical the phone call was really from the FBI, but after I declined to speak with the agent, she said that she was standing outside my door,' he said. She was actually at the activist’s former address, which he said made him additionally dubious. But last week, when the agents showed up at his current address, he said he saw the agent’s business card through his door."

I refrained from really harsh criticism about part of this #GrantsWriting & #nonprofits #FundsDevelopment workshop because the facilitator recommended that people use #AI to do that work - more than once. FUCK NO - don't do that - #BadAdvice. I hate how too many fund granters & people working to supposedly help strengthen nonprofits are fucking recommending crappy, failures-heavy, fucking AI.
Sorry but not really sorry, for cussing so much about this issue. It seriously irks me so fucking much!The representative recommending is from one of our largest public granter associations - The Victoria Foundation. I need to set up a meeting with them - ASAP! "A jury in #NorthDakota has ordered Greenpeace to pay more than $660 million in damages for defaming #EnergyTransferPartners, the corporation behind the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Texas-based pipeline company accused Greenpeace of orchestrating criminal behavior by training and providing funds to the #Indigenous-led protests at #StandingRock. Greenpeace and its supporters, including other #nonprofits and #advocacy groups, argued that the lawsuit is part of a conspicuous attempt by #corporations to destroy the right to #FreeSpeech. Longtime #HumanRights and #environmental lawyer #StevenDonziger, who was part of the independent trial monitoring team observing the trial, says it was purposely held in a region of the country with deep ties to the #FossilFuel industry. Donziger said most of the jurors in the case were connected to the industry and were 'predisposed' to rule in favor of Energy Transfer despite the 'false narratives' presented at the trial. Greenpeace plans to appeal the ruling."

"A majority of Democrats in the House of Representatives rejected the bill on Tuesday out of fear that it could grant President-Elect Donald Trump legal tools with which to target his ideological foes, but Republicans are swiftly pressing ahead.
"The #StopTerrorFinancing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, which would empower the secretary of the Treasury to designate any #nonprofit as a '#terrorist supporting organization' and revoke its tax-exempt status, is set to go before the Committee on Rules on Monday for a hearing that could tee up the bill for a new floor vote.
"The hearing was announced Thursday evening, just two days after 144 Democrats and one Republican voted against the bill as part of a fast-track parliamentary procedure that required a two-thirds majority.
"The bill, also known as #HR9495, has come under withering criticism from a broad coalition of organizations that say its sponsors are pushing it as a means of cracking down on free speech — particularly speech in support of #Palestine. In a joint statement earlier this week, a coalition of #ArabAmerican and #MuslimOrganizations pledged to continue to fight the bill.
"'This bill was designed to #criminalize organizations and #activists who oppose the U.S.’s unconditional support of #Israel’s #genocide of Palestinians and the slaughter of #Lebanese civilians,' read the statement, which was signed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, American Muslims for Palestine, and others. 'We will continue to stand firm in protecting all organizations’ freedom to speak and operate without fear of political retribution.'
"Offices for the chair and ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee, through which the bill must pass, did not respond to requests for comment.
"With #ProIsrael groups lobbying for the bill, it gained popularity among House Democrats, in part due to a provision providing tax relief to Americans held hostage abroad.
"The reelection of Trump, however, galvanized opponents, including Rep. #LloydDoggett, D-Texas, who led the charge to reject the bill on Tuesday. Doggett doubled down on Thursday after learning of the newly scheduled Rules Committee hearing.
"'In this mislabeled bill, House Republicans are hiding behind hostages,' Doggett said in a statement to The Intercept. 'Their rush to reconsider this bill is solely to offer Trump more and more power, while Trump’s nominees for key #NationalSecurity posts this week indicate how he will be using it.'"

I'm letting go of the work/project search for now. I'm tired of abuse and extraction, tried of terrible practice being rewarded. I haven't seen much in the nonprofit world in the last year that wants to fairly compensate me for my labor and expertise. It's been deeply discouraging.
