  1. Off to sleep. 🌙✨

Maybe I'll wake up in a world where hate has gone out of fashion, fascism is back in the dustbin, and late-stage capitalism has stopped chewing through the planet like a bored locust.

Better yet: may we all wake up there..

  2. #WorldParty

"Well it's got nothing to do with anything that is real
You just believe in it and it's true
You can sooth like an angel or sigh like a saint
You can dream it and see it through
You will live to see a sea of lights
Sparking on the face of a pearl
    Climb your own peak
    Find a new streak

Get yourself along to the world party (party!)

Now you've been building for yourself a cool place in the sand
You're thinking that it's mighty fine
You've got dust in your eyeballs, you got mud in your mouth
But it's your head, it ain't mine
I've got a madman of my own to contend with
Cursing in the cave of my skull
    Turn the other cheek
    Find a new streak

Get yourself along to the world party (party!)

Well I heard a rumour of a golden age
    Somewhere back along the line
Maybe I dreamed it in a whisper or
    Heard it in a spell
It was something to do with the sign of the times
And the only thing that I remember
Is a summer like a pretty girl
    Who shimmers and shines
    Moving in time
Shaking to the beat of the heart of the world

Party (party! party! party! party! party! party! party! party! party!) "

  4. Long time no see...

  5. What Can We Learn From the Birth of the #NuclearEra?

    By Eric Ross, #CommonDreams
    August 3, 2025

"In recent months, nuclear weapons have reemerged in global headlines. Nuclear-armed rivals #India and #Pakistan approached the brink of a full-scale war, a confrontation that could have become an extinction-level event, with the potential to claim up to 2 billion lives worldwide.

"The instability of a global order structured on nuclear apartheid has also come into sharp relief in the context of the recent attacks on #Iran by #Israel and the #UnitedStates. That system has entrenched a dangerous double standard, creating perverse incentives for the #proliferation of world-destroying weaponry, already possessed by nine countries. Many of those nations use their arsenals to exercise imperial impunity, while non-nuclear states increasingly feel compelled to pursue nuclear weapons in the name of national security and survival.

"Meanwhile, the largest nuclear powers show not the slightest signs of responsibility or restraint. The United States, #Russia, and #China are investing heavily in the 'modernization' and expansion of their arsenals, fueling a renewed arms race. And that escalation comes amid growing global instability contributing to a Manichean world of antagonistic armed blocs, reminiscent of the #ColdWar at its worst.

"The nuclear threat endangers not only global peace and security but the very continuity of the human species, not to speak of the simple survival of life on Earth. How, you might wonder, could we ever have arrived at such a precarious situation?

"The current crisis coincides with the 80th anniversary of the #TrinityTest, the first detonation of an atomic weapon that would soon obliterate the Japanese cities of #Hiroshima and #Nagasaki and so inaugurate the #AtomicAge. So many years later, it’s worth critically reassessing the decisions that conferred on humanity such a power of self-annihilation. After all, we continue to live with the fallout of the choices made (and not made), including those of the scientists who created the bomb. That history also serves as a reminder that alternative paths were available then and that another world remains possible today."

  6. CW: US pol, rising fascism, covid, "where do we go from here?"

Really appreciate this video from tech journalist Taylor Lorenz connecting the dots between the elite's indifference to the #MassDeath of the on-going #covid19 #pandemic and our current political moment of nihilism toward rising #fascism and #authoritarianism. I also appreciate that the video acknowledges there are things we can do--be honest about what's happening around us, connect with others to build #MutualAid and #CommunitiesOfCare: youtube.com/watch?v=zXrjlOE9e50

  7. CW: US pol, economics, consumerism

More seriously, we do need to get away from #consumerism and the current economic model that demands we buy and discard constantly without any thought to the environmental impacts of such a system, but the #TrumpTariffs aren't the way. Transitioning to a more equitable, just, and environmentally sustainable #economy would involve raising wages, decreasing the length of the work week, making housing and #UniversalHealthcare human rights, and investing in #PublicTransit and #PublicHealth, among other improvements. It would be a commitment to a slower and more meaningful way of life that doesn't require us to constantly consume out of convenience because we're just so busy working all the damn time. The #tariffs are not doing that—they're wrecking the global economy and will leave poverty and suffering in their wake for people in the US and around the world.

  8. CW: US pol, economy, tariffs, covid, some comfort

Sharing this post again in which I remind myself and perhaps offer #comfort to similarly worried folks that whatever happens with the #tariffs, the #USEconomy and #USPolitics, I have survived and am still surviving difficult things. I have more skills and knowledge than I realize, and you probably do too. And it will take all of our skills and knowledge together to survive whatever is coming:

  9. So some time ago someone on Mastodon posted that they're biking into Portugal from Spain. I just sent them a message saying hi, and that should they ever be passing into central rural Portugal, i offer a couch to crash, a warm shower and nice warm meals. This person is moving around all mainland europe, essentially with just their bike, a tent and a water bottle.

Some weeks later, this person who i had only exchanged with just a couple of direct msgs here on Mastodon , was resting for 2 nights at my house, having conversation and hanging out. Up to the exact moment we met we both barely knew each other's names, how we looked, what kind of people we were. I didn't even know the exact date and time they were coming.

It reminded me of the great days of when i used couchsurfing .com when it was still completely free. Circumstances changed since then, and i had stopped using it for a long time, and i believe couchsurfing.com is no longer completely free. But having a similar experience after so long, and hosting someone completely random without any transaction happening except pure faith in people's goodness, reminded me once again of the joys of opening your doors to randoms. 1/2

  10. CW: re: US pol, some thoughts on why people aren't rising up, thread

(18/18) I don't quite know the way forward, but I think there is a way, despite all the exhaustion and apathy, to still pull ourselves back from this #coup that #ElonMusk and #Trump are carrying out. I think there's still a way forward for us that doesn't end in #fascism. But I think we're going to have to deliberately and radically commit ourselves to care in a way that we haven't before. I don't quite know what that looks like. I think it is going to have to be something very new, something that builds on previous #leftist movements and #activist work but that transcends it. Not knowing what that will be is both exciting, because it's an opportunity to succeed where we might have fallen short in the past, and scary, because it's unknown and the future is uncertain.

All I know is that we have to try.

  11. CW: re: US pol, some thoughts on why people aren't rising up, thread

(1/?) The common answer to "Why aren't more people in the US protesting?" is that everyone is tired. I can relate to this. After being radicalized by #OccupyWallStreet, fighting the first #Trump administration, and then attempting to survive the on-going #covid19 #pandemic, I am exhausted. I want to dig deeper into this exhaustion, though, because so often, the rejoiner I hear to "People in the US are tired" is very dismissive and unhelpful. The response usually berates these hoards of tired people for being tired and expects some combination of #shame and #guilt and #horror at the #coup taking place under Trump and #Musk to rouse them. It's an understandable but ineffective response, and if we want to be effective at building a better world and opposing #fascism, we're going to have to take a different approach.

  12. CW: US pol, some thoughts on why people aren't rising up, thread

Seeing the protests against #Musk's takeover of various government agencies, from #USAID to #DeptOfTreasury, is encouraging. Seeing the #50501Movement protests is also encouraging. Hearing a few #DemocraticParty senators commit to slowing and even halting the legislature until this #DOGE #coup is stopped is a step in the right direction.

But I'm still seeing a lot of people asking why more people in the US aren't rising up en masse. Why aren't people flooding the streets and shutting down cities? Why did it take this long for even the trickle of a movement to coalesce?

I have thoughts on this, based on my previous experience with #activism that I'd like to share, with the goal of suggesting how people in the US can build movements that are more sustainable and that care for each other rather than repeating the disposability mindset of #capitalism.

  13. CW: US pol, resilience, comforting myself and maybe others too, covid

Also, thanks to my continued #covid19 precautions, like wearing an N95, I feel more prepared for a #BirdFlu #pandemic, and I've gotten used to making my own amusements—I go #hiking and #crafting for fun, and I don't eat out so much. I've also gotten in the mindset of protecting the most vulnerable in my community from #covid.

I think those changes will continue to be relevant and needed for whatever is coming in #USPolitics and the #USEconomy. I suspect us #CovidCautious folks are more prepared for what's coming than the people living like it's 2019. We've started building networks like mask blocks and clean air clubs. We know no one is coming to save us, so we have to build community and rely on each other.

#AnotherWorldIsPossible. It's already here in little, hidden pockets of the world. I just wish watching the old one burn didn't hurt so much.

  14. CW: US pol, resilience, comforting myself and maybe others too

I'm scared about the #USEconomy now that #tariffs are in place and #Trump is threatening more.

I'm trying to remind myself that in the early days of the on-going #covid19 #pandemic, I learned skills that will help me now: I can bake bread with or without yeast from nearly any flour, I can pickle vegetables and blanch and freeze others, and I can make jam.

Thanks to cosplay, I learned how to #sew. Recently, thanks to #kink, I know a little bit about rope, and I have several items that could technically be used as weapons (though most of my training is about how not to seriously injure or harm people with them).

Like me, you probably know more than you think you do. You probably have more skills than you realize. And it's going to take all of us, pulling our skills and knowledge together, to survive what's coming.

I wish we didn't have to be #resilient. But we can be, and there's #hope in that.
