Today's a National Day of Mourning in the United States. A day that honors the genocide of millions of Native Americans, the theft of their lands, and the destruction of their cultures. It's a reminder that this country's foundations are built on Indigenous dispossession and erasure. Learn more: http://www.uaine.org/ #NationalDayOfMourning #Thanksgiving

Today, many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. My family will be taking advantage of the time given to us to eat and be together. But we will not be celebrating colonialism.
Today is also National Day of Mourning for Native Americans. It was initiated by Frank "Wamsutta" James of the Wampanoag people in 1970.

Eventually, the Rappahannocks’ land at Fones Cliffs ended up in private ownership, & for the last 3 decades, much of it was used for #logging.
During the colonial period, Edward DuBois Ragan — the #Rappahannock’s tribal historic preservation officer — said the Rappahannocks “were alienated from this #land, even though treaties guaranteed them the rights to occupy, hunt, fish & oyster there.”#archeology #UShistory #NativeAmerican #genocide #NationalDayOfMourning
-
Starting in the 1640s, the #Rappahannock tribe’s land was taken by English settlers who turned much of it into #plantations. In 1924, #Virginia’s Racial Integrity Act tried to erase #NativeAmericans by declaring that every state resident had to be either White or Black. The Rappahannocks — as well as other tribes in the Mid-Atlantic area — struggled to maintain their identity for generations & essentially became a #landless tribe.

“These are people who were #displaced from their #land more than 400 years ago, and it’s so important that they’re given the opportunity to regain that connection that by right is theirs,” said Heather Richards, the Mid-Atlantic regional vice president for the #Conversation Fund, which helped the #Rappahannock tribe acquire a large parcel of land at Fones Cliffs.

-
The #Rappahannock tribe once lived in villages & towns in the lush region, long before English settlers arrived, said Richardson & tribal elders & historians. They grew corn, squash & beans, hunted deer & rabbits, & harvested berries & plants. At the tribe’s peak in the mid-to-late 1500s, its #land encompassed more than 350,000 acres along the river valley, & its population reached nearly 2,400.

-
“#Indian people have long known of the #land & our #history & presence here,” said Anne Richardson, chief of the roughly 300-member #Rappahannock Tribe, which is primarily in King & Queen County. “But so often things aren’t considered ‘real’ until they’re found or ‘discovered.’ This validates what we’ve long known.”

-
Then this summer, they came upon items on land the #Rappahannock Tribe has been working to reclaim. The archaeologists are now revealing their discoveries of roughly 11,000 artifacts — some dating to the 1500s — ranging from tiny beads & shards of pottery with detailed markings to pieces of stone tools & pipes.
It was physical proof of the Rappahannock towns & villages that #JohnSmith had described.

Listening to the supressed speech of Frank Wamsutta James....
In 1970, Frank James was asked to speak at a planned celebration for the 350 anniversary of the Pilgrims invasion of the land of the Wampanoag. "American" descendants had planned a celebration and rejected the prepared speech.

Centuries-old documents told of #NativeAmerican settlements in the Fones Cliffs area of the #Rappahannock River in #Virginia’s Northern Neck.
In the 1600s, English explorer #JohnSmith wrote of how he & his men were attacked by #NativeAmericans along the river. A document from the 1660s detailed how the Rappahannock Tribe was promised 30 blankets in exchange for more than 25,000 acres of their land.#archeology #genocide #NationalDayOfMourning

Happy Harvest Day from unceded Lenape land, to those who celebrate. I denounce this day’s roots in genocide and its historical whitewashing. But I’ll take today and every day as a chance to be grateful for family and life’s blessings, and a call to be kind and do better.#unthanksgiving #nationaldayofmourning #door #autumn #photography #thanksgiving #brooklyn #nyc

[LIVE] #NationalDayOfMourning 2025, (27 November 25 @ 12pm ET)
"Since 1970, Indigenous people & their allies have gathered at noon on Cole's Hill in Plymouth to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving holiday. Many Native people do not celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims & other European settlers. Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands and the erasure of Native cultures. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Indigenous ancestors and Native resilience. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection, as well as a protest against the racism and oppression that Indigenous people continue to experience worldwide."
